Small amp recommendations?

I'm looking for a small amp to play with in my apartment. I'm getting back into bass after not playing for a few years (sold all of my stuff). I'm just looking for something cheap, but decent sounding. I will be buying either an OLP or SX bass, and need an amp that is under $200. It isn't necessary for it to get really loud. The most I may be doing with it is jamming with someone on e-drums. It will mostly be for learning how to play.

There's so much out there in the small practice amp field, your best bet is just take your bass down to the local music shops and play through a bunch of them. Pick one you like. The brand name stuff stands up well. Peavey, Yorkville, Traynor, SWR, Ibanez, etc. They all vary in sound but most have all the basic features. You don't need a lot of power. 30 watts is enough if you're not going outside home with it.

markbass is making fantastic amps nowadays. i have a large 15" jeff berlin combo. but i also use a micromark, which is a very high quality amp with 50 watts and a 6" speaker. not sure if /where these are being sold in the US but you should look. the amp has a high quality vintage sound filter, an aux in plug to hook in your ipod to play along, etc. der basskopf

But the guy did say for under $200. MB is a little out of reach methinks.

You could look at Behringers offerings, they do quite a range of cheap and cheerful full featured bass amps.

Or, I rather like the look of the Line6 Studio 110 myself. A lot power and amp modelling in a 12" cube. You'll get to know the sound you like with one of these which will give you an idea of what to go for when you get better and want to upgrade.

Likewise there's also the Roland cube range.

I love the Peavey MAX combo offerings. The little 15 watt w/ 8" speaker combo sounds incredible for what it's supposed to do. Unless you're getting a 5-string, that may be all you need right now, and it's only $100. You can go bigger and more power in that series and still stay under your budget too.
