Smells like fish!

I just had spent a lot of time on another thread that became a bit depressing complaining about the high prices for used basses so I thought I would add something light. In response to one post here are pictures. I love the bass!

Sweet! I got a Deville 4 string custom I’m supposed to be picking up at the end of next month from them at their shop. How is the bass?

I experienced that same thing (strings that smelled like fish) with a Sandberg bass I bought new a few months ago. When I replaced the strings with my preferred brand the smell went away.

On a lighter note, I just got my new Bluesman Vintage PJ5. I was wondering why do the bass strings smell like fish? I was reminded that it was the same on another bass I got from Roscoe.

Sounds like a whale of a problem to me...

I love it! The neck is a bit smaller than my other which I've always like but it's very comfortable, the workmanship is great and the PJ sounds great. It's definitely worth it. Please post yours when you get it.

Are you sure it's the strings and not the fretboard? Maybe they used linseed oil on the fretboard. Linseed oil can have a somewhat fishy smell that some people find very unpleasant. Linseed oil contains omega-3 fatty acids and I believe that may be the source of the fishy smell.

Some types of linseed oil seem to smell worse than others. Personally I can't stand the smell of linseed oil, fishy or not, and never use it. It's a fire hazard too, old cloths with linseed oil can spontaniously ignite. Definitely not worth the hassle IMO.
