Is it possible they use fish oil somewhere in the manufacturing or preservation process ?. 25 years ago I worked in a steel roll forming plant and we’d occasionally get in a certain type of steel from a different manufacturer and it smelled terrible. Someone told me it was fish oil.

My best guess is that these strings were taken off one of the basses that Country Joe McDonald's bassist played way back in the day. I could be mistaken. Just trying to help.

Why waste your inheritance on strings, you should just boil them.

That’s a good idea.

I actually recommend poaching in butter or roasting with lemon, dill and garlic. Or with summer coming, you can dress the strings with olive oil and salt and char on the grill.

@sunnycal, is it possible you accidentally bought Sardine Markley strings?

Wow, people amazing to see all the responses. The strings really do smell like fish and it is my new bass. I just had spent a lot of time on another thread that became a bit depressing complaining about the high prices for used basses so I thought I would add something light. In response to one post here are pictures. I love the bass!
