Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Remember when you used to be able to smoke on airplanes? Soon it will be as uncommon as that. As an Illinois resident who occasionally enjoys a cohiba and a glass of blue label, it's amazing how difficult it is to find an establishment that can accommodate it. Currently I have to either go to a smoke shop with a lounge or to the Rivers Casino that has a semi-outdoor smoking area. Fun in Chicago in January.

Smoking on planes goes back to the era when they served real food. My dad traveled a lot for business back in the day and they used carve meat and his seat, serve wine with dinner, offer after dinner drinks and all served on real china and silverware. Now you get a bag of peanuts.

Cured not smoked, but...

Can I have that extra crispy?

This is because the FAA used to regulate the fares. With flight prices the same the airlines competed for your business by providing better service. Now it is a race to the bottom to cut costs to offer cheaper prices. Hence all the add-on charges for bags, seat assignments, etc. I miss the old days when they called them "stewardesses" and they were way hotter than most of the "flight attendants" today.

OK so not to derail my own thread here's an update. We arrived in Memphis for the gig last night in the middle of a nasty ice storm. Radio and TV were telling people not to drive unless it was absolutely necessary. This is good advice because if you've ever seen Southerners drive in snow then you know the comedy and carnage that insues. Ice is of course even worse so the bad weather cut attendance greatly and the room was not as smoke-filled as it could have been.

The good news is I did get to smoke a cigar on stage. :bassist: Should have pics soon.

Never proven? *************, that is like saying smoking doesn't cause lung cancer because it would be impossible to do a proper double blind study to prove it, its just not true. Just because we can't directly prove something doesn't mean we can't get a very good idea of how things are through that wonderful ability we as humans have for abstract thought and gaining insight through natural observation. You can try to logic yourself in a circle for the rest of your life but thats never going to make smoking any less terrible for our health.

I quit cigarettes cold turkey three years ago, and don't have the urge, but I still like to smell them. Actually, I like a fine cigar once in a special while. But, the fact that I got over regular, frequent smoking means that I don't miss the smoke in bars anymore. (Hard to smoke a cigar at a gig, though, since you have to leave it outside. Lost three inches when the wait staff picked mine up between sets the other night).

I don't smoke. But my Dad does (he's trying to quit actually) and I've always been around it since I was little. There is something I like about the smell sometimes. It's almost calming.

Yeah, I grew up around it, too.

Tell your dad that all he has to do to quit is think of something else. When the urge comes, just avert your thoughts. That's what I did. If I can do it...

Some of the bars around here have to pay a fine if they are caught letting patrons smoke inside. So in order to curb the fine the bars make you pay for an astray and allow you to smoke inside. Take that one big government!!!

In my area, repeated offenses lead to a 30 days suspension of liquor license.

No booze creates less business than no butts.

I always thought it was funny people complained of the health risks of second hand smoke (never proven) and then go onto pound their bodies with liquid poison :)

Smoking kills, drinking kills, eating too much kills, eating too little kills, fizzy drinks cause depression, caffine causes heart attacks, too much red meat leads to bowel cancer, holding your pee too long is bad for the prostate, cars kill, global warming kills, climate change kills......

Basically, you're screwed no matter what you do!!!!!!
Who wants to live an extra 5-10 years anyway ? Thats 5-10 years when you're 70 or 80.....so confused and miserable you'll probably be wishing you were dead.

Well alrighty then :D

As a non-smoker, I like playing non-smoking establishments. As a musician, I'm not a fan. When certain clubs went non-smoking here, the crowds definitely fell off.
This. I quit in 1976, but for me it's part of the bar scene. I'm not thrilled with anything that hurts business.

Around here, the animal circuit is where smokers can stay indoors.

I'm just glad we have a beer on stage again. There was an odd law the books for a while that made it illegal to drink alcohol on stage because you were getting paid and, hence, 'working'.

My grandmother was completely sane and as healthy as one can be up until she died at the age of 96. Of course, she didnt drink, didnt smoke, didnt eat red meat, and was quite active.
