Smoking is killing me

Very good comments everyone. I told the band that I can't play in that particular casino anymore. Some of the others have better ventilation but since I'm only a sub, don't have to play so much.

I spent years working in nightclubs when I was gigging 6 nites a week and wonder how much crap I breathed in..

really? a ban? so no one can open a smoker-friendly business?

I've never been a smoker, but it seems to me that bars are places people go to drink and smoke. what's next, an alcohol ban in public?

Huh? You live in San Diego. You know there's no smoking in any public building here. The smoking ban in bars is the best thing that ever happened for entertainers. People are going to go to bars whether you can smoke or not. Many have outdoor patios where people can smoke.

If you're being facetious, you got me.

Hmmm... that's not what singers have told me.

Most fog machine formulas are based on distilled water and glycerin, which certainly beats the chemicals contained in second hand smoke. Ive sang with fog machines blaring in my face, I could stand that much easier than cigarette smoke, it doesnt smell, and is not as harmful to the lungs. It may be a little thick, maybe thats where some may have difficulty. That or theyre using crappy fog juice.

I dunno about that... I used to work at a place that rented them - the smoke goo that they use is just some nasty oil - THAT can't be good for the old lungs...!

Glycerin is no doubt the nasty oily substance left behind, but Im sure that beats:
Yes. Among the more than 7,000 chemicals that have been identified in secondhand tobacco smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful, for example, hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia.

At least 69 of the toxic chemicals in secondhand tobacco smoke cause cancer (1, 5, 6). These include the following:

Arsenic
Benzene
Beryllium (a toxic metal)
1,3–Butadiene (a hazardous gas)
Cadmium
Chromium (a metallic element)
Ethylene oxide
Nickel (a metallic element)
Polonium-210 (a radioactive chemical element)
Vinyl chloride
Other toxic chemicals in secondhand smoke are suspected to cause cancer, including (1):

Formaldehyde
Benzo[α]pyrene
Toluene

I'm no old salt like some of you guys, but I've got about 15 years gigging experience under my belt, and I've always carried a clip-on fan to gigs with me. It was a lot easier with the pre/power rack setup, to have something to clip to, but still - smoke or no smoke, I get hot onstage and a fan is a nice thing to have.

OT, It's become amusing to me how many avid anti-smokers pop out of nowhere every time a thread comes up mentioning smoke in any way. Can't let a person make their own choices anymore, I suppose. My personal opinion is that to allow smoking or not should be up to the individual bar owners - if their patrons don't want smoke, they'll show it by not patronizing that bar, and eventually the owner will see the profit in making it a non-smoking establishment.

The owner is the one taking all the risk (financially) then gets told by some busybodies how he/she can run their business:eyebrow:. Only in the land of the free:scowl: If people really hate smoke so much, they should take the risk and open a non-smoking establishment and leave other peoples businesses alone. Funny how everybody is always on some kick or platform that will stick it to someone else in this country.

No smoking bars is the best thing that has happened in a long time. All the bar owners around here complained that they would lose business. That was the dumbest thing I have heard. I know way more people now that go to the bar and have a few drinks because they know they will not smell like smoke.

On a not so popular side note. If you smoke, you are an idiot. There are a lot of things that are bad for you, but smoking has got to be one of the worst things you can do.

ermm yeah and if you drink your an idiot too eh =S

not that im saying your biased or anything.........

compare smoking everyday to drinking everyday. then get back to me..

and even though i dont drink i am not against it..

compare second hand smoke to getting glassed at a bar when your sober..

not really in the same league.. and the last one will still happen after a smoking ban,

to be honest i think you have got more chance of getting run over after your gig than the smoke hurting you.

priorities people.

americans can complain about it if they want! they have to pay for their own health . but the english have no right when you compare how much tax we generate, compared to how much the nhs costs!

What kills me is the fact that anti-smokers constantly cite the amount of chemicals in cigarette smoke, yet they legislate the adding of MORE chemicals with the "fire safe cigarettes". Then they want to ban smoking OUTDOORS. What about all the engine exhaust? Breathing all that exhaust can't be good for you. Are they going to ban cars, too? What's next? Banning smoking in your home? If they're going to do all that, why not just make them illegal? We all know how well prohibition works.

All that said, is smoking good for you? Nope. Should you quit smoking? Yup. I've smoked for longer than I'd like to admit, but I've cut down a hell of a lot, and will be an ex-smoker one of these days. The bad thing is my chewing gum bill has skyrocketed! Quitting smoking is extremely hard to do...people joke that quitting heroin is easier, but that's pretty close to the truth. The physiological effects of nicotine on the body make it one the hardest substances to quit, but the answer isn't legislation, it's education and treatment combined with a willingness to quit. Just like any other substance abuse, if the user doesn't want to quit, he or she won't.

All the non-smoking bars I patronize and perform in are usually packed up tight most every night. Many of those people had previously avoided smoke-filled venues. Many of them are smokers who just rolled with the changes.

All of that is fine, but I do not want to breath anyone's nasty cigarette smoke indoors!

+1. Might I also add one of the dumbest, one of the most expensive, and one of the most pointless habbits you possibly take up!

I used to live in CA, they were one of the first states to take up the smoking ban some fifteen years ago. At the time I worked in a bar, and initially business sufferred because all the pissed off smokers were like "I'm not going there anymore"!!!!!!.......Haha, yeah right, these people can't even quit smoking! But the business eventually came back and eventually got better because now non-smokers would come too. The smokers just go outside to have their cancer-sticks, no problem.

Smokers are pathetic! Remember when they they first banned cigarettes on airplanes??? Smokers were like, "Well that's it I'm never flying anymore"! What a joke, you guys can't go three hours without lighting up? Of course they could, what are they gonna do stop traveling?

I lost my Dad to lung cancer 11 years ago. As he was withering away and eventually dying, my Brother and Sister (both smokers) said "That's the wake up call I needed, I'm quitting". They were both smoking again in less than two weeks. Smokers are the weakest-minded people on the face of the earth, they will never stop flying, they will never stop going to bars, and they will never stop smoking either!
