Smoking is killing me

I really hate threads like this. Every single time someone so much as mentions the words "smoking" or "cigarette", a bunch of people pop up outta nowhere and start blasting smoking, and smokers. If this thread were about anything other than smoking, it would violate rule numero uno, but being anti-smoking is the cool kid thing right now - and since it's bad for you, it's okay to call smokers whatever you want.

On a not so popular side note. If you smoke, you are an idiot.

I could say the same thing for spending several thousand on a bass that you play in a bar for less than $100 a night, but that would be rude and pointless, and possibly earn me an infraction. As long as I'm a smoker, though, you're allowed to call me whatever you like.

Heh...any Rush concert, and the US Festival back in '83 was a drug fest...not to mention a really good time!

+1. Might I also add one of the dumbest, one of the most expensive, and one of the most pointless habbits you possibly take up!

I used to live in CA, they were one of the first states to take up the smoking ban some fifteen years ago. At the time I worked in a bar, and initially business sufferred because all the pissed off smokers were like "I'm not going there anymore"!!!!!!.......Haha, yeah right, these people can't even quit smoking! But the business eventually came back and eventually got better because now non-smokers would come too. The smokers just go outside to have their cancer-sticks, no problem.

Smokers are pathetic! Remember when they they first banned cigarettes on airplanes??? Smokers were like, "Well that's it I'm never flying anymore"! What a joke, you guys can't go three hours without lighting up? Of course they could, what are they gonna do stop traveling?

I lost my Dad to lung cancer 11 years ago. As he was withering away and eventually dying, my Brother and Sister (both smokers) said "That's the wake up call I needed, I'm quitting". They were both smoking again in less than two weeks. Smokers are the weakest-minded people on the face of the earth, they will never stop flying, they will never stop going to bars, and they will never stop smoking either!

Way to generalize people. You know what I hate more than smokers? Self righteous people who are perfect.

it was called the finish line...not too far from the horse track....seriously hard drinking/dancing/smoking mojo...it was actually a pretty fun little gig for a while

Finish Line still exists. Wonder if you were at the old one on Donaldson that is now called Peecox, or the new one on Dixie Highway. Peecox is one of my least favorite places to play. On top of the cloud of smoke, all the walls are covered in mirrors and steel plate, so it's a giant reverb tank. I played there a lot when serving my sentence in cover band purgatory.

Little tangent here...

This weekend, Mrs. WoT, little miss WoT & I went for lunch to a pub that we used to frequent, but hadn't been to for a few years.

We got reminiscing - back then, we used to have to turn up before noon and wait in a queue for it to open, just to be in with a chance of getting seats in the non-smoking area.

Now, post-smoking ban, it was nice change to turn up at our leisure, and breathe clean air.

It seems so odd that we used to have to go through all that in years gone by.

FWIW, it was as busy - if not busier - than it was back then.

I personally like smoking bans. Several of my good friends smoke, and that's cool with me. The fact that people are smoking matters not to me, its them that is dying, but its the stink mostly. I like smelling good, and beyond collecting basses/gear, I have a large amount of cologne, just to make sure I am a wonderful scent. Stinky people, well, stink. And, if I go out to a place, to play, or just visit, or whatever, I'll take fresh air any day. Just go breathe in some air from outside, maybe out from a city a bit, perhaps in the mountains, and then please, I dare you, tell me cigarette smoke smells better then that.

You know, ALL the greats of yesteryear played and sang and came up and made it in REALLY smoky environments that I'll bet had WAAAY worse ventalation than an Indian casino.
I wonder how smoky it was for the Beatles at the Cavern ... or in Hamburg?
In those days everybody and their dog had a cig dangling from their mouth.
What's different about today is there is way less smoking and way more whining.

I've been subbing for several bands who play the local Indian casinos. One place has such horrible ventilation that by 8:00, the air is thick with cigarette smoke. When we play the 5:00-8:30 shift, I can quickly leave. When we have to begin at 9:30the air is so thick with smoke that I struggle all nite..gagging.

For those of you who play these casinos, how do you handle the smoke? I've thought about getting a gas mask but don't think anyone would want me wearing it on stage.

I'll be watching this thread myself. Kentucky still hasn't gone non-smoking, and some of the places I've had to play have smoke so thick you can cut it with a knife. I try not to play these places anymore if I can help it, but there's not a lot of options without crossing the river to Ohio.

Ever heard the word "no"? Don't play in bars that allow smoking, if it bothers you (same to other TBers with the same issue). There are a multitude of venues that DO NOT allow smoking for you to play in these days. Play in those.

well this was the one that was connected to the Days Inn....there was a peecox next door that had more rock bands, on nights off I preferred peecox and their drunk women. I was on Donaldson...peecox was almost next door. Although I've heard the old Finish Line is now Peecox, maybe it took over the Days Inn location? It's certainly bigger than the old peecox that was about the shape of a Mobile home. It was mind blowing to play there and watch numerous people just stagger out at closing time. I may always be in cover band purgatory..once I get playing again. I haven't played a gig since smoking in bars was legal so I'm quite curious to see what it's like. For me it was usually tolerable except in places like the Finish Line where it seemed that ever person in the joint was smoking simultaneously.
