Speaking only for myself, one of the best things I ever did in my life was to quit smoking pot. I became a much better person, husband, father, friend and musician. And, I quit coughing up green crap all the time.

Pot effects everyone differently. Personally I like the stuff but don't care for it when I am playing as it makes me space out the timing and forget parts.
I have been in lots of bands that smoked at gigs and rehearsals. It never made it easier or more productiive and although it always made everyone think they sounded better than they did, eveyone actually sounded worse.
+1I agree, it's not the pot that's the issue, it's your friend's integrity and will power. If people can't stop smoking weed and let it ruin everything else in their life, it's because they're a loser, not because of the weed. Point it out to him what things are like because of his issue, record it on video so he can see, and tell him you guys aren't gonna deal with it anymore
I don't know any great music ever written under the influence of anything.
I"m not going to get into the war, but honestly, weed does nothing for you, like alcohol does nothing for you. All of these "stimulants and depressants" are just that, something that distorts the real and makes you feel something you can't seem to feel on your own.
I don't know any great music ever written under the influence of anything. People think they are better, but they are worse. I have hours of old video of bands I know that really, when sober, kicked the livin' crap out of songs. Then, when they got some notariety and better access to illegal substances, became near blubbering idiots on stage.
Even George Martin, the real genius behind the Beatles, had said for decades he did not allow it in the studio, and not while recording. Gee, I wonder why.
In this case, the guy has been supported his whole life, actually enabled. He has a home his parents bought him. An amp you guys bought him. You never really confront him. He, in my opinion, is a lost cause.
You can still be his friend and can him. Make it clear that you get together twice a week, period. If he can't commit, then you need to find someone who can. If he feels he no longer can function in the band like everyone else, tell him you love him, care about him, but in the long run you need someone who will be part of the band.
You are free to suggest that he needs help, but my guess is that he's been told that time and time again. He won't change until he needs to. And, since he doesn't have any basic necessity that isn't being met, he doesn't need to.
If it bothers you, then its time to move on from him or this band.
Are you f'ing kidding?
John Coltrane was a heroin addict, so was Kurt Cobain.
Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia = LSD
Mozart was a RAGING alcoholic.
Great musicians and addiction are hand in hand.
+1Fire that Sumbich. All he cares about is himself. He has no regard for your time and the effort your band puts into music. He's made his decision. He'd rather be a stoner than a musician.
I'm 50 and I have seen lots of people lose all motivation and focus on weed. I even had a friend who smoked so much he ended up having a stroke and becoming a virtual vegetable. He was healthy and in his fifties. Unfiltered smoke in your lungs is bad for your heart and brain.
Your friend needs help. If you care about him, do something to help.
BTW, people only think they play better when they are stoned out of their minds.
Yesterday the three of us talked it over and we felt entirely the same + we jammed like mad!
Any advice or simillar stories?
Under influence every simple sh*t sounds genius to the stoned person. When sober - he will realize how he is lagging behind in his performance.
Leaving his guitar at the rehearsal space, preferring to be high instead of jam, and now cutting down getting together kinda indicates that hes bored with the band thing.
Maybe two separate issues.
marijuana is a very complex organic matter. it's many forms and uses have enabled more than just great music. from textiles to medicine, no other plant has been as benificial. the cannabis molecule also resides in the human brain. so, whether you injest it or not, we ALL are under it's influence!
it is said to inter-act with dopemines(sp) and affects our emotional state in a positive manner.
look it up...
Your point's taken, but you're overstating it to extent that it sounds as if you're suggesting that without drugs/alcohol, there are no great musicians, and that they not only use drugs, but are addicted too.Are you f'ing kidding?

When I read people saying or agreeing with the statement that "pot is a motivator," I cringe.
