So do we have flashlight geeks too?

Looking to buy dad a flashlight for Christmas. I love the brightness of my surefire but it eats batteries and he will not go for that. What will last a long while, uses regular (easy to find) batteries and is not junk?
He will be using it every night when he walks his dog.
Thanks.
Mike

I buy my CR123 cells from batteryjunction.com for $1 each. For long runtime and good brightness (albeit slightly inferior color definition) get an LED light. A Surefire E1L or E1B Backup will make a good pocket light. Solid warranty and bombproof construction. I prefer Novatac (they run about $100) and Ra lights (a bit more upscale). They are as tough as cockroaches. I tested them by slamming them against steel floors on my ship and both survived the abuse.

I'm definitely a Surefire addict. I have a LumaMax L4-HA-WH that I carry on me and a Kroma K2-BK-BL/RD that I keep in my truck. Both get enough use to justify the price. My Kroma gets a lot of use around this time of the year, since a lot of the annoying scavengers cant see red its great for spotting them at night.

Streamlight ProPolymer 4AA Lux Div 2. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. And at about $35, the price is right.

Well here's the Burk collection minus the Petzyl headlamp which is hiding in my fishing vest. The thin black thing is a Benchmade Pen (you never know when you'll have to kill someone with your pen:D). The M3 is attached to an AR 15, but I do have Shurefire front forearms on order. The plan is to go a dedicated Surefire weapons light at some point. The Pistol Mount light is the Mil-spec surefire on a Dawson Light rail attached to a full frame Kimber 1911. This is my intruder welcome package. I am going to order one of the new tailcaps for one of my E2's.

I tried to carry the sun but it was too bulky and it never worked at night when I need light the most.

well, at night i get my light from a source slightly less bright than the sun, and it's called the moon. it also doesn't destroy my night vision like most other sources of light, so that's a plus. if i really need some enhanced light on a particular object, i just use a lighter. :D

but serious, i have a few flashlights, my favorite still being the generic giant maglight, but that's more of a weapon than a flashlight.

heh heh heh:

Just picked up a 6-LED flashlight. I have had a 4-LED for a while and wanted to try a 6-LED. All my friends said why 6 LED's, isn't 4 enough, a lot of famous flashlighters used 4-LED models. Changed the batteries and the LEDs, there is much better light quality now, it really cuts through. Just found out that Conklight has a 7-LED model, but that may be too much.

Too many turkey leftovers...

So I got the Fenix PD20 for Christmas. It's a pretty cool little light and only takes 1 CR123 battery. The turbo mode is 180 lumens but it's only good for an hour, so I usually keep it on the lowest (9 lumens, 35 hrs) or the next one up (45 lumens, 6.5 hrs). It also has a strobe and S-O-S pattern programmed in.

Not as bright as some lights out there, but for the runtime on the lowest setting and the brightness of the turbo mode it's great for a carry light. Turbo mode would be great for blinding an attacker at night, they wouldn't be able to see for at least 30 seconds.

Oh, did I mention how TINY this thing is? Wow. About as long as the width of a palm, 3.25". I haven't decided yet if I'm going to carry it on my pocket with the lanyard or on the belt holster...

Here's a demonstration with its big brother, the 2-CR123 PD30

The Fenix is a good light. Don't let the numbers about runtime discourage you. You'd be surprised how much use you can get out of one hour. Besides, it doesn''t mean that your battery will be dead after an hour. Most likely it will drop the light down to a level that the battery can sustain until you run it down again, at which point it drops down some more.

My Novatac only runs 120 lumens for 30 minutes but since I only use it for seconds at a time, the battery holds up for a bit of use.
