so all you Californian Talkbassers...

STAY OFF THE ROAD!!!

Does anyone have the opportunity to drive in the years prior to licensing age anymore? Just curious.

I'm 50. When I was a kid, it was very common to learn to drive as soon as your feet could reach the pedals. At a very young age, I'd driven cars, tractors, motorcycles, my uncle's MG was a favorite! My Dad regularly sent me on dump runs in the Jeep, I guess I was maybe 12-13 at the time. Obviously this applies mostly to rural hickville types like myself, and I suppose it doesn't happen anymore. But when it came time to take my road test at 16, in my Dad's Pontiac Grand Safari wagon in the ice and snow of a Wisconsin December, I pretty much had it wired.

Of course, this is the same dad that booked me on gigs at age ten.

Welcome to the road Icon :) Now listen to a 53 year old, and be advised...

What you learn in your drivers ed, be it on line, or hands on, it is just like taking lessons on your bass there...

When you first start, your a bit scared, and not sure what to do when. As you learn to play, you gain background knowlage, and a good feel for how to play what, when. Know what I mean???

Well, the car is just the same... Starting / stopping / and staying out of trouble will all come to you in time. After a short time, you will think you know everything... Rightttt.....

If you were to talk with Paul Macartney, or Tim Schmitd about playing, that would be like driving with Jeff Gordan, or Richard Pety... Unrealistic??? Ya, but it's there to make a point...

Listen to those around you that know. Who would you listen to about playing??? Someone with a years playing time, or someone who's been at this for a few decades??? Same with driving... Your best buddy may now a thing or two, but your best bet, is to drive with your dad / uncle / or someone you trust, who has been behind the wheel for a while, and most importantly, in the area of the country you will be driving in.

I live in Green Bay, travel a lot in Michigan's U.P., and parts of Canada. Lots of snow and ice / deer / moose / and, well you get the idea. On the West Coast, you will be facing a whole differant bunch of things to worry about, so seek out someone who can help ya learn, and do the best you can :)

Enjoy my young freind, and play safe...

TDY :)

well, over a month after I started it, I finally got the course done. Took me a helluva long time (it's been a very busy past few months), but I just passed the test. Now I gotta wait for it to be mailed to me, then I go to the DMV, pass another test, and hopefully start driving soon.

there's lots of farms around where i live, so pretty much all my friends started driving at like 12. Me, i grew up in Sacramento, and moved to Utah 2 years ago..... So, i'm a little behind. Still can't drive stick. I'm also not obsessed with huge trucks. It makes me feel left out... :bawl:
