so... drivers permit...

 Do you only need to pass a written test and then you get your license?

Here's how it works around here:

You can take your lessons with your parents but the parent first must take all the tests themselves and equip the car with at least an extra break on the passenger's side, and a triangle to put on the back of the car for the driving lessons. However, most people choose to go to a traffic school to obtain their license.

I don't remember how many driving hours I had to have or the number of theory lessons, but it was over 10 of each at least. One driving lesson was on a very slippery track so you got a feel of how it is to drive on icy roads. After the lessons, to get the license I had to first pass a theory test that was in two parts, a theory part (pretty simple) and one with traffic pictures in which you had to pretty quickly be able to tell what you should do in a particular situation or point on what's wrong on the picture. You couldn't do this test before you had turned 18 for some reason... Anyway, when you had passed that test, you booked a time to do the driving test, not with the teachers from the driving school but with some other higher authorities. It was the same thing with the theory test too. I was lucky to be able to take the driving test only three days after I passed the theory test on my birthday. The test went fine and I got my license immediately after the test drive and the guy had gave his comments about my driving skills.

Actually, I didn't get the final license. I got that one later. I just don't remember how much later, about two years I think.... There was also a second part of the driving license education that I think I did approximately one or one and a half year after I had got the first temporary license. That part didn't require any tests. It was just a couple of theory and driving lessons and another tour to the slippery track...

The whole education was about 7 - 8 000 FIM (nowadays about 1200-1400 €). Pretty expensive...

I drove well before I had my license. And it was on the same vehicle I own today! I've always driven stick. Kind of rare for someone my age.

i started off on a stick....at 16? er 17?....im 18 now and still drive it.

i only have my permit aswell, but i will be able to go for my license soon, and i drive my myself a lot:)
