Is it cascading stages then? That's pretty cool. And yes, the 400/+ has 4 12AX7's 2 for the pre's and 2 for the tone.

You're doing quite well! The V8 does, indeed, have 7 preamp tubes. One each is for Gain 1 and Gain 2, tube 3 is makeup gain for signal loss through the passive EQ, tube 4 is used for the compressor. Tubes 5 and 6 are less clear to me, but one appears to be a fixed limiter of some type, and the other may drive the DI. Tube seven is master preamp output gain.

I know far less with regard to the 400/400+, but it appears that the two gain stages of tube 1 are used for inputs 1 & 2, tube 2 powers the rotary EQ, tube 3 is a driver and tube 4 is a buffer for the output section.

Then of course you have the difference of 12 6L6's in the 400+ versus eight 6550's in the V8. Actually, the 400, which was designed to run six 6550's, is probably more similar, overall to the V8.

If all works out well, I will have a Peavey Classic 400 in my hands before too long, and I think that this will make for an interesting comparison to the V8, as they are laid out fairly similarly, and they each have eight 6550's in the output section.

Didn't the V8 ship standard with KT88s in it?


The Classic 400 has:
POWER AMPLIFIER SECTION
All-Tube Power Amplifier: (8) 6550 power tubes
(mine has Sovtek KT88, the picture from the seller shows JJ KT88)
Driver: (1) 12AT7
Input Stage and Phase Splitter: (2) 12AX7s
Rated Power: 400 watts RMS into 4 or 8 ohm with 120 V AC 60 Hz line

PREAMP SECTION
(3) 12AX7s

it's got dual preamp channels that are switchable and combinable.... one with master volume and one without.

I'm interested in your comparison of the 2... the V8 was my 1st choice with the Classic 400 a close second.

I'd love to A/B their tones!

I really hope the new trace decide to do an all valve head eventually, it'd sell real well, the prices of gems like the V8 prove that. What I want to know is how they all ended up in Austrilasia? Anyway, great find, that dark shot with the tubes glowing is just... One of a large number of amps on my riddiculously large GAS list.

I don't want Trace to make V8's... Then I won't be so special! :p

More came over here than the US i'd presume just because it's cheaper really. We run the same voltage as them and I think it's cheaper to get stuff here. It's certainly easier than the US anyways.

Another tube amp i'd love to try is the peavey classic, just can't find one over here!

I've just being running this thing with the master full open on 10 and the gain on around 3 in half power mode... It's insanely loud and punchy. I was knocking things off the walls all over the place. There was a DVD cover on the floor about 5 foot away from the cab, with an empty m&m's packet laying on top, when I play the M&M's packet was pretty much floating on top of the cover from the vibrations! And we have carpeted floors! :p The Schroeder is crazy.. The amount of thump and chest hitting goodness I can get from it is just joy :p

Ahhh, If only I could switch between that nice power tube overdrive to clean easily, i'd be in heaven (I have a couple clean parts in songs, and one entirely clean and slow song).. Maybe I need another V8? :p

Infact, it was almost! I picked it up from an office in a studio and it was pretty dim in there. There were slats/blind things on the window slightly open up the end where the V8 was sitting (the others were closed) and it sent a lot of those strips of lights onto the amp. It was meant to be from then on! Heheh.

Can you get close with the Gain 1 and Gain 2 settings? Then, all you'd need is the footswitch.

Nope :( I find gain 2 too bright/harsh unless I use deep switch and cut some treble. Then when I go to gain 1, it's too flat sounding :(

I'll get a mullard from gain 2 and hopefully that'l do something. It sounds cool and snarly on it's own IMO, it just doesn't gell too well with the band, whilst pushing the power tubes does.
