So.... I get this new cab right?

You can use any kind of gear you like and you can make it sound however pleases your ear
That's very good advice. Why is it that 99% of your posts say exactly the opposite?

Aren't you the guy building a bass cabinet out of a car sub-woofer
No, he's the guy that told that poster not to do so because it wouldn't work. Having run out of ways to discredit the message now you try to discredit the messenger. Please make like Joe Friday and stick to the facts.

... there is no need to be personal about this
Quite right.

I had a 4x10 cabinet back in the late 60's loaded with JBL speakers. It's truly amazing that this cabinet put out massive mid and high frequencies * * * How in the world did JBL pull this off?

My initial thought is that bass players didn't really slap or tap back in the 60's . . . possibly someone may have, but if they did it was very very rare.

I like a tweet in my cab with a knob on the back to turn it down. Barely on, and I can keep my amp set flatter. Dial it off if you wish, but what a nice option to have available IF your application could possibly benefit from it.

On a similar note, I played a siz string Modulus for a few years. Nice bass, didn't really need the 6th string (high C). It was nice for soloing with this little jazz thing I had going, but for my regular Top 40 cover gig, it sat unused. Never a problem, just never got used, except for perhaps one or two notes per night, just for a convenience with hand positioning. Then I thought "wow, not necessary, but OK to have around just in case".

I later went back to 5's, but it was nice to have there, just like all of the days in the year I don't need the jumper cables in the back of my car, but the ONE time every two years I might, it sure is nice to have.

If the guy only spent $100 dollars on the cab and is at all curious about the sound with or without the tweeter than, IMO, the only sound advise would be to spend $50 and fix it. If the sound isn't happening then he could turn it off, and he's still only out $150.
As far as tweeter/no tweeter goes in general, anytime I play a decent sized show I either go direct, or go direct and mic the cab. The house system uses HF drivers to help reproduce my sound, whether I like it or not. I feel I need a tweeter much of the time but there are some gig's where I like going without because it is more appropriate for the style of music and I feel like I can play-out more without getting-up in anyone elses kitchen.
I do, however feel that alot of tweeters out on the market these days really sound un-musical until you're either 100ft away or drunk or sometimes both, so I am very discriminating about the cabs I buy.

.

"Sound" advice. Especially if he intends to re-sell after a while. Without the horn, it's not the same cab and he probably won't get the $$$ he would if it were all put back together again. At the very least, just bypass it, but don't ruin the cabinet by plugging up the hole and messing with the original materials.

Leave it in and just bypass it to see how that sounds. Then make up your own mind as to whether it's needed or not.

I checked before. It doesn't work at all.

I emailed SWR a while back about it and got no response. I can't find a number to the company so I turned here. If I don't like the sound, yes I can bypass it. I was just looking for something to brighten the sound since these flatwounds are a little less bright. Still love the strings regardless.

On a side note, I had originally planned building a cab with "car subwoofers". Due to the fact I could get them much cheaper and my knowledge of them was much more extensive. But they don't extend into the upper frequencies well at all. And mid speakers and tweeters would have to be added and I decided that it wasn't worth the trouble with it. I just lucked up on the find. ;)

I guess I'll try emailing again. If I get no response, any alternative tweeters that would be a nice replacement? :)

I think it had the link to parts express for a replacement.
Pay attention to the issue on caps/transformer, this
could have been your issue as well.

There is another thread recently on
SWR lack of service.

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=195496&goto=newpost

I actually dug up a telephone number for SWR, it is
not toll free.

Answering emails apparently is not part of their idea
of customer service. You might as well email the Kremlin.
Actually, if you did that, you would probably get a
response a lot more quickly from 'someone'. ;)

Well, I have a SWR WM 4x10 in my cubicle. Under the side
of the desk.

Don't ask...

I'll pull the tweet out tomorrow if you want, I just have to remember to bring my ohm-meter. I have to pull out a
driver anyway to see if that model has PAS or Eminence drivers, and I have been procrastinating.

There is always SWR service, but I bet they don't know ...

Oops, sorry, I got jammed up.

I am in the frozen food business, and the crapola hit the
fan this week re trucking and shipping issues. It ain't pretty out there.

Do me a favor and email me on Friday morning through TB,
put tweeter in the subj line and that will remind me to do it.

Fridays is good 'cause the ratrace ends friday morning.

Sorry for the delay.

Ok, I pulled the tweeter from the SWR Workingmans 4x10.

It is a LeSon, Model LJ, made in Brazil. High Efficiency Dome
tweeter.

It measures 5.5 ohm nominal electrical impedance as measured on an ohm meter. I believe the
common measure of total impedance then would be considered
8 ohm.

I think a direct replacement is available from Parts Express.
