I've always wanted to do a 2-band MM with a passive tone/ passive PP.
Tame those highs and weird mid thing, and be able to do a P-esque rolloff in passive.
MM pickups are totally useable passive, dunno if people just dime their MM's and are used to that.

is the hole too small or the screw?......add some plumber's tape to the screw if the hole is too small?

The screw should fit most basses, are you sure it's too small? They're supposed to be snug. I've used Schaller on most of my basses with no issues. In the event that it actually is too small- I would see what drill bit fits into the hole on its own (not using the drill), and then go one size up to carefully make the hole bigger.

I have a SUB and an OLP, both in passive. And I prefer the more subtle warm tone.

Music Man did a fantastic job on their “budget line” of basses. I own two legit EBMM basses, but I’ve almost bought one of the cheaper Rays on several occasions. They just sound amazing, especially for their price point. I’d drfinitely gig with one with no second thoughts.

Ok, so I’ve looked on GC for GK. Should I get a GK amp head or a speaker? I’m gonna have to spend more on one or the other. I’m thinking a GK speaker and a good amp head, but I don’t know enough. Could you help? This will be around Christmas time, once I’ve gotten good and my friends have a solid band structure laid out.

Most people recommend separate head and cabs, which lets you mix and match, you can add cabs if you need extra volume. Don’t get stuck on one brand though. GK are excellent, but the Fender Rumble combos are superb, and pretty light too. Play everything you can find locally, ignore brand, how does it sound?

GC doesn’t sell new GK gear anymore. Are you dead set on getting an amp and a cab, as opposed to a combo amp?

The MB112-ii is a great little combo amp that has no problem keeping up with most bands in a practice setting. For gigs you’d have to plug into the PA because it probably won’t be enough to fill a bigger room, but for most gigs you should be plugging into the PA anyway.

Hmm. Thanks for the advice. I was briefly able to steal some time on a fender rumble 100 owned by a friend. I thought it was great. I’m looking for amps that, when combo’d with the sterling, can help me make lots of growly, rumble-y, punchy aggressive tones. Can the rumble 100 help me do this. I understand it largely has to do with play style, but is the fender versatile enough?

No, I’m just jealous of all the famous guys who have a separate piece to alter the sound (joking). Yeah, I mean, I tried out a rumble 100 that a friend had, it’s pretty cool. I just want lots of growl, and have no idea if the fender is the best one. I know it largely has to do with my competence, but still, could the fender rumble 100 get growly, rumble-y, punchy, aggressive tones from a bass?

I used an American Sterling for a long time as a primary bass and a few months ago I was at GC when I saw a SUB-series bass on the wall. Initially I stuck my nose in the air and thought to myself “there’s no way this can compete with my much more expensive MIA Sterling!” but then I played it and was very surprised! It still has that MM character and it’s a tiny fraction of the cost. It took a lot of willpower for me to not buy it that day, but I’m really trying to keep my herd small and streamlined. Overall I still like the MIA a bit more, but is it $1500-1700 better? Hell effin’ no! I would absolutely use a SUB as my main gigging bass - and probably should since it’s not super wise to bring super expensive instruments out to gigs.

This is why I don't take my stingray out in public. It's the one bass that I cannot replace.
