so.. i was robbed last night

Ah, was just saying, mileage may vary, being from a different country. Was noting that mine certainly did (as long as it is within the building).

And some will here too. I have actually seen a friends guitar covered under his homeowner's insurance after it was stolen from his car. Usually though the limits are very small and to really have them properly covered a rider is necessary. I have a rider for guns and guitars. It is a minimal increase in my premium and I highly suggest it. Especially since we are talking about renter's insurance here.

Spoken like a white boy from suburban St. Chuck. lol

Don't see you moving the fam to Wellston. ;)

Weak...

It's safe to say that you don't know me well enough to imply anything about why I live where I do so you should probably save those back-handed regional race-based snarks for someone else.

Oh yeah - ;)

I am not interested in playing the "why black areas in St. Louis are not safe for white people" game. All major metropolitan areas have areas were people are disproportionately more or less safe based on a spectrum of things like race, gender, religious convictions and so on.

But the OP doesn't seem to have limited options. If he's opting to live in the so-called "hood" out of some misguided sense of proving himself as a non-racist - all I can say is to each his own.

If he has options and can afford it, choosing to NOT live there does not make him racist, it makes him practical. He might not get as big a place or be as close to 'the action' as he'd like - but hey...

But then he might have to deal with snarky comments about where he chooses to live from people who don't know him and seem to want to characterize him as racist because of it.

I would be interested in knowing why the OP chooses to live in the hood. Care to share?

Again, I agree with all of this.

As a side note, I don't need you to explain why you live where you live. St. Chuck is pretty nice. I do a lot of work up there. I'd hate to be trying to get out of there in the morning or into there in the evening, but it's a nice place and I ask you to make no apology for living there.

My comment was made in haste, before I understood where you were going with your original comment. Personally, I think the OP SHOULD move and I stated as much in my very first post in this thread.

And I never implied that you were racist, nor was that my intention. Apologies.

No worries, man. I know my response was pretty direct and humorless. The whole, "people move there to get away from black people" attitude gets old and I am sensitive to it and tired of it.

So - it's my bad and it's all good.

Regarding the OP - I think there are many things he needs to do to deal with his situation that have already been laid out. Get insurance, a more secure apartment, move to a safer area, be less visible with your 'stuff', get a big, mean-looking dog to house-sit while you're out, secure it all better inside the home in a locked closet - etc...

I think the gun talk in this instance is an irrational, emotional reaction that has little to no relevance to solving the OP's problem.

I say all of this because I don't want my points taken as 'anti-gun' rhetoric. Quite the opposite - the choice to become a gun owner should be made with a clear head and for all the right reasons - not as a panacea or an emotional reaction to a burglary.

IMO, of course - I mean who am I to say what reasons are good ones, right? None of the reasons offered here seem to be related in any way to solving the OP's problem.

I live in southern Jefferson County, so I hear the same BS. I was raised here though so.. I used to live in the city. My decision to move had nothing to do with race. The city just sucks. St. Charles is a nice place to raise a family.

Totally agree about the decision to own guns being made for the right reasons and while I think living in the hood is a good enough reason, I see your point about it not having much to do with this particular situation.

Total hijack in progress here...

It's a shame that someone would rather arm themselves than move to a less dangerous area. I suppose if he owned his home it would be a different story, but he's renting and last time I checked, that meant you were pretty much free to re-evaluate your location on a regular basis.

Besides that - unless you plan to pack heat everywhere you go, at some point your going to have to leave that thing at "home" - which is a place that more people than just you have legal access to. I am not going to presume he cannot trust his landlord or any of the other people who can legally let themselves in to his place - but then again, I'd say it's a given that the more people who have a key and are legally allowed in there, the more likely it is that gun is going to end up gone - used in a crime - and tied to him as the legal owner.

Renters are in a sucky situation when it comes to privacy and security. Dump into that a dicey neighborhood and a questionable previous landlord (crackhead) and neighbors who hold you in contempt for whatever reason, and all signs point to "get out - find a safer area and a more secure apartment" - not "arm yourself and take a stand"

That's just sort of silly, IMO.

a few things.

i know that owning a gun would not have helped. but in recent news, they attempted again the next night at another apartment in the building. if i hear rustling in the bushes, im headed after said rustling with said gun. this will NOT happen again so long as im around. they clearly arent all that picky.

i hate dogs. especially big dumb "guard" dogs. there certainly isnt room for one in my studio (read: closet of an) apartment.

police report is filed, and with new information, they are a little more likely to care. pawn shops have been contacted as well as guitar stores in the area. working on getting a warrant to check the pawn shops back inventory. going to circulate pictures as soon as i can get them. my tech has been notified. hes from a slightly less terrible neighboring town, and he promised that in the event my stuff comes by his store, it will be locked up, and those possessing it are going to pay. going through every channel imaginable.

its not like they stole a tv. they got my game systems but i really dont care about those. these things are rare and extremely easy to identify.

regarding moving. it IS on my mind, but i cant honestly think of where i'd go. i moved here because i could not and still cannot afford to live anywhere else. rent here is $375 a month. anything over $400 and im giving up eating to pay for the roof. not okay in my book. the racial breakdown of the building and area mattered not. i suppose i should have been more race savvy and been more cautious, but thats not really like me.

from the outside looking in, my place is not a dead giveaway of whats inside. all of my windows other than my kitchen patio are covered with aluminum foil to keep the sun out and keep A/C costs down. the blinds on the patio door are always closed other than when the cat pokes her head through. even if they were wide open, nothing but my completely untouched kitchen would be visible from any angle. unless they've been stalking me a while, which is highly unlikely given how messy the crime was.

from what i can tell, they saw an easy point of entry, the lights were off, and they went for it. im going to see if such point of entry can be used to build a case against my ex landlord that assured me the wall mounted air conditioner he personally put in was a good idea. they ran in, grabbed anything they could in 5 minutes and bolted. dropped a couple things on the way out. clearly had no idea what i had or they'd have gotten all of it. they stole a cup full of pocket change that i take to coinstar. the whole cup. didnt pour it in their pocket. took the cup. ive asked around, especially with people that are more familiar with the area, and that seems to be a dead giveaway of crackheads.

Stuff is stuff, you and your pet are uninjured. That is more important.

But it could be worthwhile for if something happens while you are there!

not that you would, but you clearly dont know how attached i am to my stuff. im trying to look at upsides, and im still out about 1/3 of all i have lived for since i was 13. those instruments are irreplaceable. i had a hard time telling the officer what it was all worth because a good deal of it was out of production, and some in incredibly short supply.

yes, i am physically unharmed, but im even more unhappy with my life than i was prior. i dont like living here. i dont like being broke. i dont like not having insurance and driving the hunk of **** i call a car. i can look at all the upsides in the world.. its not making me feel any better. id rather be in a hospital bed from trying to fight them off than part of my collection be out of my sight.

maybe im materialistic. or just obsessed. who knows. but they could have taken every other thing in here and i would not have cared. every stick of furniture, every article of clothing, my wallet, my keys, and emptied by fridge. if i still had my studio and my guitars, id sleep on the floor and revel in the fact that the things that mattered were still here. but they arent.

hey,... you're missing the true meaning of life! learn from your loss and move foward. life taught me a lesson that cost me $80k. i had a hard time dealing with it for awhile, but oneday i laughed it off and never looked back. i realized i had life and freedom. ups & downs are a part of life, so live long and...

BTW, i have a feeling you'll get some of your stuff back! now relax and take a load off. gl.

ps: yeah,... i'm old. :hiding:

Thats a ton of money , but yeah if you get to hung up your not living.

I hope you get it all back and I am sure you will see some of it.

I don't know what it's like in your area, but where I am, paying a little bit more a month can get you in a much nicer place. When I moved to where I am now, £400 a month would get you a pretty scuzzy place, £475 was almost a night and day difference.

Can you pick up more work? 35 hours weeks at the fed. min. wage would surely give you enough to pay a little more in rent?

Maybe once you have mourned the loss or if you manage to get the stuff back, accept that it's stuff, you will be able to move forward a bit.

This is going to sound like a dick move after what happened. But maybe it's time to re-evaluate things in your life, if everything is so miserable. Rather be in a hospital bed than have lost some bits of wood and metal? It just strikes me as odd that someone would accept the minimum standard of a necessity (roof over your head) in order to keep a fair amount of luxuries? And if you were, why not take that extra bit of cover?

Is there nothing that takes your interest that you could persue further?

OK - dog is out (understandable) - still don't agree with the reasons offered for adding a gun to the mix. IMO too much emotion, not enough rational consideration for the facts - but OK, we disagree. Just please don't shoot some kid playing hide and seek.

As for moving and cost - I solved that by finding a friend to be my roommate. For the bulk of my early, apartment dwelling years I shared a place with at least one band mate which made life easier in a lot of ways.

Be careful and I hope your situation gets better soon.

I don't think you're being materialistic- I think you just don't believe anyone should f^ck with you or what you own. You worked for it and them stealing it doesn't equal "working" for anything. It's just stealing. Losing a toolbox, four bicycles and a couple of cars makes me agree with you, completely.

If you buy a gun, get it for protection, not because you hear rustling in the bushes. If you go outside and shoot someone, you'll be the one who's in trouble. Make them know you have one, but don't use it unless you're inside and have no other choice.

Good luck.

FWIW, I think it's a shame race was ever brought up in this thread. I doubt that the scumbucket who did this broke into your house because of your skin color. It was most likely about "what's in here that I can steal and fence to finance my next crack purchase?"

Change your skin color, the perp's skin color, or your neighbors skin colors in any combination and the reason for the robbery almost certainly remains the same.

Now if your neighbors saw anything, or somehow approve of what happened to you because of racial considerations, shame on them. But it sounds like several of them either have been victims or almost have been victims too, so it appears to be a scumbucket issue, not a racial issue IMHO and based on what you have written.

Good luck getting your stuff back, and I hope the scumbucket gets his (or her) due.
