Hmm...psychopathy is generally used interchangeably with sociopathy with sociopathy having become the preferred term. Antisocial personality disorder is something else.

And get a new doctor. A lot of academic theoriticians want to make every character flaw a mental illness, and you do not want to play along:
You'll never be bonded.
You'll never get a security clearance.
You'll never purchase a firearm, much less get a carry-permit.
And your Life Insurance rates just went up big time.
Don't accept victimhood status. The price will be lifelong and far more than you'll want to pay.
I wouldn't have thought a true sociopath would give a rat's heiny about the diagnosis. But all I know about sociopaths is what I get from tv dramas. Self serving pricks with no sense of others' feelings, fairness, morality etc.
I did say I was confused about it. Idk if I should care or not.
Don't fear or be ashamed of the diagnoses. This occurs naturally in every so many humans born. There must be a reason for it in the grand design. I would however recommend staying away from Politics or positions of power.
You'll never purchase a firearm, much less get a carry-permit.
The difference between you and I (apparently) is you don't have any concern if you hurt someone and will in fact hurt them if it serves your purpose. I on the other hand have no inherent desire to socialize with other humans.
You fake socialization because it allows you to manipulate people, I fake it to avoid being labeled a hermit who prefers his own company to that of others. At one time I faked it so often I found myself having trouble keeping up with who I was supposed to be in any given situation. You will find that false fronts, for whatever reason become tiring and more trouble than they are worth.
You can continue to be self centered A-hole, or you can make a conscious choice to step outside yourself and be more genuine in your feelings for others. This is most definitely a learned behavior and to avoid the work required to overcome your current personality defects by claiming you want to remain "true" to yourself is just another way of saying I prefer to be a self centered jerk because it gives me an excuse to screw people over. It also keeps all eyes on you, which if you talk to people in prison you will find the majority of them suffer from the same ego problem, they can't stand not being the center of attention which is how they wound up in jail to start with.
Short form here is, short of an organic cause, you can correct any personality traits you want if you are willing to put in the work required to do so, or you can continue to use your diagnosis as an excuse to act an ass.
By the time I found out what was going on in my addled brain I had almost ruined it with alcohol. I would have given anything to have known sooner because I could have started correcting the problem(s) sooner.
The fact that you acknowledge your negative personality traits is proof enough that you can correct those negative traits, if that is your desire, and you don't need drugs or specialized therapy or any kind of surgical procedure. All you need is the desire and willingness to do whatever it takes to modify your behavior.
Ignorance of your condition is the ONLY excuse you had for continuing, and that excuse has been removed. All that's left is the work to heal yourself, or rationalizing away any need to do something about what you are.
I doubt this is what you wanted to hear when you opened this thread. If you are typical of the type you opened it to feed your ego, or you were simply looking for validation of your decision to continue being a self centered jackhole. Either way, best of luck going forward. Oh and BTW make an effort to change or resign yourself to being old and alone. Trust me my friend, I've been to the rim of hell many times over and now that I'm old, it doesn't scare me near as much as the idea of old and alone.

Anyway, it could be worse, you could have been diagnosed with Borderline personality disorder. The average shrink prefers dealing with a sociopath than someone with BPD (I'm not bpd for the record but apparently my gf is)
What kind of help are you seeking?
Congrats, you are now qualified to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

That's the truth! After prison, the next highest concentration of sociopaths are found in corporate management.
Police, prosecutors, and surgeons also have high numbers.
If this "psychiatrist" actually uses the term "sociopath" as a diagnostic label and thinks that an MRI has any validity whatsoever as a diagnostic marker for that concept--I'd really recommend that you seek a different mental health professional.
Just a question for you. How do you see close personal relationships you've had and what do you base the relationships you do have upon? Is it purely on the assumption of 'what can I get out of this' or what other motivation is there?
I'm just interested in the dynamic you build for interactions with others. I've known a handful of people who fit in the same 'mold' and upon recognizing it, I've discontinued contact.
A few pages in, he said he was diagnosed with ASPD, not sociopathy, he chose to use sociopath himself, probably assuming there would be a greater familiarity with that than ASPD. He also mentioned the reason for the MRI, to see if his frontal lobe was smaller than the average humans, which it indeed is. if you would have looked up the frontal lobe, instead of blaming the psychiatrist for wanting to run an unnecessary test you would see it's primary function is to recognize consequences from actions, suppress socially unacceptable behavior, and it processes emotional output from the limbic system. So, the MRI was necessary for the most accurate diagnosis of Neko.
Why did you seek treatment/diagnosis? If it's not impairing your life, you wouldn't have gone to seek help, correct? What led you to this point?
