So..I'm uncultured white trash (wine content)

it's best to just enjoy what you like and the snobbery be damned.....to me all wines have something about them i don't like,so i'll have a bud.....the music/art world are the same way.....some guys feel they have to be on the cutting edge of everything to impress others.......i would like to think that avant garde jazz, merle haggard or doo wop on the radio are all enjoyable and if someone looks down their nose at any of 'em......well you know....
I'm actually a huge Bully Hill fan, which if you've ever taken one of their tours, you know they scoff at wine pretentiousness. I'm living down in South for a few months, and I can't find any Bully Hill anywhere. Grrrrr!
Back in February, I tried some Red Diamond Merlot, which I was really impressed with. Also, I recently had an Urban Riesling that I really enjoyed. It had just the right acidity to it.

i had lunch with someone and she actually ordered a red with a fish course.....i was so embarrassed i dropped a handful of french fries
I love wine. I've had $2-1800 bottles. One of the perks of working in fine dining. I didn't pay for the $1800 bottle. It was a 1986 Petrus Merlot. Fantastic stuff but honestly it tasted as good as some $100-$200 bottle I've had. For me I've found the sweet spot to be in the $20-$80 range for excellent wine with out the hype. Great Barolos and Barbarescos to be had. Taste all depends on what I'm going to be eating. If it's a backyard BBQ then I'm cracking open the cheap $7-10 bottles of Vino Verde, Rose Rioja, and Semilion. A lot of why drink slightly higher priced stuff to is that I get migraines from young wine. I need something with at least 5 years on it to mellow the tannins so I don't want to shoot myself in the head.

I enjoy most wines. All I'll add is that wines local to Colorado taste like dirt. The "earthiness" was akin to drinking very low viscosity mud.
Paying $500 for a Merlot has nothing to do with culture.
It is a purely snobbish jet set attitude.

That's kinda my feeling.
$500.00 for a bottle of Merlot for a very short period of enjoyment
or
$500.00 for a nice Schecter bass that could possibly last a lifetime.
I like a good merlot, but I like a good Schecter as well. Plus, the Schecter has more potential to make me money. I guess I could use the merlot to impress a potential business client or something. *lol*

I buy local wines mostly, which is great in Washington State but maybe not so hot where you live. Better yet, I get comp'ed bottles or glasses in the $20-80 a bottle range quite frequently, since winery gigs are my main thing out here. There are also many really good blended reds here in the $10-20 range. Here are few I really like:

I can just walk a few blocks to the local farm stand and buy any of these, although a few of them always sell out well before the new bottling arrives.
If you came out here and spent a day tasting I would almost guarantee you wouldn't have to ask about the difference between Yellowtail and a nice big red from the places I play at. But maybe not, and if so, consider yourself lucky!
I'm much more of a beer snob than a wine snob. I might get a $20-30 bottle if I'm cooking something nice at the weekend, but for a midweek glass of wine in the evening I'm quite happy with 2 Buck Chuck.

I like good ol' Florida orange or grapefruit wine. It's distilled like moonshine then blended back with orange or grapefruit juice, then aged...........for a few weeks...........in special plastic milk jugs
Over ice, it's fantastic and you can't taste the alchohol.........but it will leave you SCHNOCKERED after two tall glasses 
Best suggestion is to take some wine tasting classes, I suspect... I myself, like many here, prefer the taste of wine in the $12 to $25 range; most I ever spent was $45 for a bottle of ice wine (worth it, but only buy it once a year or so.) I'm lucky to live in southern NJ, where we have several excellent local vineyards where you can taste in the sales room and buy the bottle on the spot; plus there are some decent vineyards in Pennsylvania whose products you can buy locally here for not a lot of money. Sorry, I'm not much of a person for champagne at the best of times; a good Zinfandel, rose or some of the sweet wines (I am wierd - I LOVE Asian-style plum wines...) are what I buy, when I do buy wines...
