Whoa! Your really going all out on this one, Mikey. If you do the split fretboard be sure to document it here. I'm curious on how your going to turn the two pieces into one fretboard. That particular design looks as though one template will work for both sides(?).

I concur.... the fretwire would cover a good portion of it.

Thanks. I'm cool with the headstock. I think that Mike is still gonna tweak the size some. As I said before, I think this is a design that Mike uses as a sort of signature. If you look at some of his other builds the headstock looks really nice.

The headstock will receive some refinement for proportions, but since the bass clef is repeated in the head it is my opinion that the flow is there. Also, the head is the fastest way to identify the builder. ;)

I am really excited about the fingerboard challenge. It is a design aspect that I have yet to attempt and I am really interested by it! I just need to prefect the curves as well as the Bass Clef inlay and I will be much happier with the design. What two woods are you wanting for the fingerboard?

And while we are here - Let me give a shout to Alan. If you guys have not built an instrument with Alan's pre then you really should add one to your schedules. They are great!

Mike,

I remember you saying in an email, before this went public, that you would like to use either ziricote or tulipwood for the fretboard. Do you think that one or both of these wood still be a good idea? If just one, any thoughts on what to use to off set that? You know wood & I'm ignorant to most of it. Also, you had said something about wanting to use purpleheart in the body accenting. This fingerboard might be a great way to tie that into the overall look.

Hmm. I just assumed that we would have Wenge and something else for the two woods. If you are wanting me to pick I would immediately go to Tulipwood as one and then a contrasting wood for the other side. My first thought is to go with Wenge and Tulipwood. If Ziricote is not used in any other part of the instrument it wood look out of place in my opinion.

Who's that handsome gentleman pictured in the background? ;) Gotta say how cool it is to see that wenge come to life in the planer. BTW, great time with Mike and Chris at Tom Weber's Friday! I'm hoping some dust will be stirred up down there with this this thing at some point. :bassist:
