I've been following this thread since the beginning, but haven't had anything to add because I can see all sides and don't feel strongly one way or another. But this post made me realize that the main (if not only) reason that the rollout of the new TB Store was at all controversial was that the featured product that was rolled out (via discount offers to supporting members) happened to be strings -- and BSO has already established itself around here as a popular string vendor with a loyal following (in part, I presume, because of TB discounts). If the rollout had involved discounts on TB t-shirts and mugs -- or perhaps any number of other kinds of products or accessories -- nobody would've blinked an eye.

A week ago I decided it was time to order some strings, and although I had never used BSO before I was planning to try them based on all the good things I've heard about them here at TB. Then I received the alert about a discount on strings at the TB Store. I still haven't ordered from either because I honestly don't know what to do. I guess I'm the guy that the debate is all about.

I ordered my TB shirt on Wednesday along with a set of strings.. I got em om Saturday.. Good stuff..

as far as i know - which probably isn't very far - jason makes a living selling strings. would anyone here not feel a punch in the gut if one of the places they've advertised for years suddenly went into competition with them for a piece of that pie you need to pay your bills?

i rarely buy bass strings, but BSO is where i buy 'em, not because of the discount, although it's appreciated. jason has answered probably more than a dozen emails from me asking him about which short scale strings do this or feel like that, which ones will fit my mikros, etc. his answers aren't brief, they're well thought out, often backed up and always very quick. he's not a jack of all trades - he's all about bass strings, and he often has info about strings you can't find anywhere. he seems like an honest guy who really cares about his business and his customers.

jason, if you're still following this thread, i for one appreciate all the info you've brought to the board and hope you'll keep posting. yeah, you create unique content for TB, but you also help keep the word going about the kind of person you are. because that's a big part of your business' branding - the person behind the business.

i'll continue to be a contributing member of TB because it does good things for me and it takes a lot of time and some money to run a board like this. but i'll continue buying my strings from BSO.

Just for the record, Jason has contributed a lot of posts to TalkBass, but he's not a paying advertiser/sponsor (beyond the $15 bazaar fee). His contributions benefit the site, and I hope will continue to do so. His contributions also benefit his business, with thousands of links to BSO in the forums and hundreds of referrals to his site every month from talkbass.com. If he continues to post, he'll continue to rack up referrals, which I hope he'll do! As I've stated numerous times, I will not post advice or ads in the forums. So if we're talking about a level playing field, the TB Store is not going to be on Jason's turf :)

This hits the nail on the head for me. If I was Jason I would not be happy. I also rarely buy strings but will continue to purchase from him when I do.
My membership just expired and I was debating about renewing. Nothing personal against Paul but I just felt if he wanted to open up a store there are a lot of other things he could have offered for sale other than strings. (The only item I can think of that someone such as Jason sells through here.) But as pcake said (and I did think of) it takes a ton of resources to keep this forum open and I do enjoy the site. (Even though at this point I am in OT more than basses!)
So I will renew the membership, buy strings from Jason and make the best of an awkward situation.

I'm not planning to buy or sell stuff here, and neither do I have any desire to access the lobby, but I'm seriously considering a subscription after this thread.

Anyway: I get all my popcornwounds and carrot tapes from BFD.com - my favourite brand is T.I.T. (Tempests In Teapots).

That's all you advertise to commercial users. If you wanted more you could have proposed something.

I have contacted you in the past regarding other advertising info. If you would like to open that conversation again we can do so privately.

I don't want the forum content to get spammy, so we're not going to offer more avenues to CU's to post in the forums. Display advertising and sponsored forums are available, as you are aware. Like you said, for private conversation, just contact April via the contact form :)

I'm not interested in a commercial forum. I do not have info on the "Display ads."

If what I have been doing (Posting providing information) is against your CUP / TOS, it has not been provided to me. I do NOT post links to my companies website directly in any posts as that is against your CUP. Your CUP is VERY strict. The times I have they were instantly edited and I received warnings. That happened years ago. The only "link" I have is in my signature. That is not against your CUP. If it were, it would be removed. Signatures are "OPTIONAL" for users to read.

I have always liked your model of keeping Talk Bass less spamy not allowing any "vendors" to post links and things. This forced us to provide more "information" rather than just saying... "Here is a link to the product on my website that provides the information you need...." This "Content" is what has helped make "TalkBass" the resource it is today.
