So Talkbass Has A Store Now...

What in the world makes you think the mods are supposed to stay neutral and uninvovled? They were all members before they were mods and they're still people that have opinions. They should stay even handed in their dispensation of points, judicious in closing threads and should be careful to honor the rules here, but to stay uninvovled or not offer their opinion is, IMO, asking a little much.

What make me say that? The fact that they said they would do that. Have they not said from the beginning of the thread that it's not concern of the mods, they won't be promoting or bumping the threads, they won't be interfering with threads about the store? I just went back and read it again. And it wasn't but a couple pages later we have a mod calling members incredibly selfish and naive over their opinions of the store. The forum being non affiliated with any business other than membership seems to be a large selling point of the forum. It seems that some are taking it seriously.

As for being members before mods, perception is everything. A mod coming in hard to defend is never going to be looked at as fair, or neutral.

Again, I don't care about the store one way or the other. It just seems like a class in how NOT to start a business.

Hey Jason,... of TalkBass? The TB moderators have no stake in the store and couldn't care less about it. The TalkBass ...stupid to jeopardize it.
That's the only reference I saw to the mods potential conduct, apparently Paul was mistaken about their level of care.

We're not being paid or asked to promote the store. It not only doesn't benefit us, but it would look gross if we did. It's a side business for Paul's family that doesn't affect the forum usage or the staff at all.

IIRC you also had some issues with the way the responses were coming.

This is great. Y'all all better pipe down before Pacman shuts this down. Superfreak I can't believe you even jumped in. You'll probably be banned by noon again, just for posting too much.

Strings? Who cares I never change my strings anyway.

Not a supporting member and never will either. Why pay when you don't have to. That's the new American way thanks to our president. Oops went political there against the rules. Oh well. Have a great day everybody. Good talk(bass)

Only in OT:rollno:

Haha where did you come from?! It's like folks come out of the shadows to get offended haha sorry man, I have no idea who you are, but since you insist...
Your posting opinions and knowledge for 15 years on the site doesn't give you skin in the game. Right? You know I'm right.
You can have whatever opinion you wish, but you better bring a lot more to the table than rounds vs flats, or where on the string to pluck in order to get a certain tone if you expect to be consulted about decisions regarding the business side of things.
Sounds a little self important to me.

I'm not a supporting member, so I haven't made any comments about the situation at hand. I've been reading along with interest to see what the others think, and how this eventually turns out.

I don't believe I'm any more important than a guy/gal that joins today, but since some of us have been around 10 or more years, there is a sense of community with those folks that perhaps you overlooked when you laughed about people being sensitive. That's all.

I don't play the bass, so I can't help you with your questions about technique or string choice. Sorry.

-Mike

You have been here posting for 15 years, and you don't play bass?! Please tell me that you are not kidding!!
You're probably pulling my leg, but I don't care hahaha that is the greatest story!
Serious...I love the idea of some random person with a strong passing interest in bass coming to the forum for years.
You're my favorite person right now, and I love you.

I played in a gigging band when I joined. I stopped playing bass about six years ago when the band dissolved. Because I don't play bass, I refrain from giving out any advice. However, since I made quite a few friends early on, I still hang around and post in OT.

As for me being your favorite person, if you send me your bass, I'll sign it and send it back. :)

I won't argue that the amount of time it takes to build and maintain a website such as TB is quite hefty. But even folks who are not paying members still contribute their time and more importantly, their content, without which, TB would not exist.

For better or worse, that seems to be getting overlooked. The content, for better or worse, is what draws people here and keeps some coming back.

I know you're wrong. You apparently aren't familiar with what he's contributed over the years so we end up with this comedy routine based on a poorly thought out assumption. As far as skin in the game, do you mean money? If so, yes, he didn't make any money providing the content that he did. Neither have I for the handful of people I've helped over the years, largely with no benefit to me, just trying to help. Not a very good point for you to be making IMO. Maybe you'd like to tell us how stupid we were for doing it all these years?
:hmm:
:D

No offense to the moderators, it's a tough job and maybe you're right... moderators are why people come here. They apparently have skin in the game since you don't consider members having any. Granted they can keep the place from descending into chaos but I'm pretty sure people come here predominantly for content. Right? You know I'm right.
:D

Unfortunately that makes for a lopsided conversation. Because while mods can do what's been done here, members can't. If even-handedness isn't available, neutrality is probably a good choice.

He has 15 years of content! Do you really expect me to read his entire post history? That's a tall order, Brad Johnson commercial user!

so we end up with this comedy routine based on a poorly thought out assumption.
I do what I can, Brad Johnson commercial user, and appreciate your affirmation.
As far as skin in the game, do you mean money?
Yes, Brad Johnson commercial user, but specifically the sentiment that user content provided by non-supporting members should equate to input in business decisions regarding a forum that they choose to post on. To be clear, being a supporting member doesn't give a poster any more expertise about business nor does it afford a right to be involved or consulted regarding the direction of the forum. But, Brad Johnson commercial user, even if the owner of a business were soliciting opinions from the public about the direction of a forum, do you feel they should listen to the people who actively pay money to support their business, or to people who have been posting for over a decade, but do not find enough value in the forum to pay 4 dollars a month to help it succeed? Perhaps they feel their non-monetary contribution more than makes up for the lack of financial support. That may be a sound argument, and one that has merit, and even motivates a person like me to renew my membership every month; however, it certainly entitles them to nothing more than an opinion, and is disappointing to see the reaction of some when the weight of their opinion to the owner doesn't match their emotional investment and perceived contribution to the forum.
Or, to reframe: you're a commercial user, Brad Johnson commercial user. Do you openly solicite opinions from the general public when you make financial decisions about your business? If you do, to whom do you listen: people who do not, and openly state they will never purchase your (insert whatever you sell), but say great things about your product, or will you listen to the people who actively buy your (insert whatever you sell)? Surely you can understand why the principle is very similar, if not the same. But above all, the business relies on you, and your acumen to succeed, and not the opinions of the people. I should think this is true even in this environment, and is evidenced by the lack of solicitation by the owner of this forum.
Perhaps you feel differently, and perhaps you have been asked by the owner for your expertise regarding this, which is apparently, an insufferable decision to sell strings. I can not join in the indignation.

If so, yes, he didn't make any money providing the content that he did.
I don't think he expected any money. If he did, he should have had a contract.

Neither have I for the handful of people I've helped over the years, largely with no benefit to me, just trying to help.
You are a commercial user, Brad Johnson commercial user. If you have helped only a handful of people, and have largely received no benefit from selling (insert whatever you sell) on the largest bass player forum in the world, do not be surprised if your business advice is not solicited. Although I am sure they appreciate your support, and thank you for not just posting opinions for over a decade (although that is important also, but for different reasons, as previously stated.).
Not a very good point for you to be making IMO.
No point, just observations. I'm an observational comedian. I'm sorry, I thought you could tell from my comedy show.
Maybe you'd like to tell us how stupid we were for doing it all these years?
I do not think you are stupid, Brad Johnson commercial user. But, in fairness, I have not read the years of contributions you have made, either, so I reserve judgment.
:meh:

Also emoticons are creepy.

Hey bub...I was a supporting member for a long time. I don't remember why I stopped.
For the record, I have no complaint about not being consulted for my opinion about this store. My initial comment was just to mention in general the importance of this forum to members who've been around a while, and why it may matter to them about being 'heard' when they do share an opinion about anything.

It's a fair point

Since this came up a few pages back I'd like to mention that mobile users don't see a link to the store or signatures, or even text in avatars really.

While this forum is a private for profit entity so it's their house their rules, I think that the roll out of the store could of been handled better. I have no issue with TB having a virtual merch booth, I think putting up a store that's in direct competion with some of your advertisers, supporters, and big commercial users and uses the forum in a way that other users can't isn't totally kosher. I have no problem with a TB store that sells strings, tuners, effects etc. But. I think it should be setup as either a totally separate entity that has to play by the same rules as the rest of the "commercial users" or as a sort of partnership/sub contact thing EG if someone orders strings for example it would come from BSO and TB would get a percentage cut off the top. Like an amazon of bass. Just my two pennies.

Edit: Another thought is to support the commercial users by buying from them instead of the manufactures (when there's a difference), I think Jason mentioned wholesale discounts.
