So Talkbass Has A Store Now...

Talkbass burritos would be really cool.

This is my feeble attempt to distract people long enough so we can all pull back and for a second and take a deep breath.

@SLaPiNFuNK my friend I have no horse in the race but you might want to ask yourself what you are trying to achieve by going public with this. How do you think this looks to potential clients?

I wish it weren't public and was brought up with current advertisers to discuss.

A conflict of interest with who? The site as a business makes money through advertising and, now, through the store. The site as a forum is not affected in any way by this. The only change is the addition of a tab that says "Store" between the Wiki and Members tab. If we're not promoting brands in the forum, we're not conflicting with anyone. And btw, I'm pretty positive all the brands the store carries are brands that Jason and every other string store carries.

The only real conflict of interest would be allowing other companies to sell strings to have a presence here, and that would be a conflict of interest against the TB store, not against the other companies. Except those companies aren't being asked to leave.
what when the store starts selling basses and amplifiers?

I agree the store should be on the exact same commercial use footing as the other advertisers.
Do any of y'all think that I'd be so stupid as to compromise the integrity of the TalkBass forums for a side-business? The TalkBass forums have been profitable (ie, my day job, supporting my 4 (soon 5) kids and wife since 2004. This is my livelihood, my job. And I LOVE it. The store is for my family. My wife is shipping out of an upstairs utility room, and the kids are going to grow into this family business one day. Compromising the unbiased integrity of the member-generated TB Forums would destroy the whole thing.
I think you fail to see the wood for the trees in this butterfly flapping wings stage.

I guess I can understand being taken aback by how sudden it was implemented, but I think the initial shock will wear off pretty quick...

As far as where your money is going .... if the membership fees don't go up, and the ability for you to sell items doesn't go down, I don't see where a complaint can be made.

a complaint can always be made.

I plan to continue my Supporting membership, as I enjoy the benefits associated with it, and love the TB community.

I was a little surprised, though, when I received an Alert message about the store. To me, that's the differentiator in this discussion. Do other commercial participants have the ability to send alerts to all Supporting members? I've never received one, but I don't know if the capability exists. If not, then this might be perceived by Commercial users as an unfair advantage, especially if the product line expands.

Just out of curiosity, was any of the outfall taken into measure in the cost/benefit analysis of this roll out? I understand that it's Paul's site and he can do with it what he pleases and people can either stay, leave or be impartial, but was the topic of member grievances being publicly aired taken into consideration? I'd love to have been a fly on the wall if so, and when the decision was made. I mean, TB staff had to see this coming, right? And if so, what was the conclusion that was made with regard to the negative feedback before pulling the trigger?

I don't claim to speak for Paul or the other Admins, but I believe the difference is this.

Every time a commercial user posts, they get promotion for their business.

Paul did a one time alert for supporting members. I don't believe there will be numerous threads about the store. I highly doubt mods or admins will be asked to put anything about the store in our signatures.
