so this happened last night

One time, drunk female listener asks if we know Simple Man by Skynyrd. We said no. She said "20 bucks if you play it". We said "we'll butcher it". She said "I don't care, I wanna hear it." It was a slow night so we decided, what the heck. We proceeded to butcher it (small crowd, mostly her friends). She dropped a 20 in the tip jar.

We never did that again. It was so not worth it.

I usually offer bands money NOT to play Springsteen songs...
During a gig with my "country/classic rock" band, some lady came up during the break and wanted us to play stuff like Macarena, electric slide, etc during the break because people wanted to dance and we should play that music. It is one of my very reare flirtations with a FU attitude.

... Like coming up to a death metal band and asking for Dueling Banjos.

I'd like to hear that, but then I really dig Surf Report's cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper".

Being in a Celtic band, I can't recall the many, too many, drunken requests that defy imagination – should be memorable, but it all becomes a blur after a while.

I was playing in a group doing stuff like "Girl From Ipanema" and "Red Roses For A Blue Lady".

All men in our 40s-50s.

And our drunk girl was genuinely angry that we didn't know Alanis Morissette!!
Woman approaches the stage, speaks with sax /leader. "We've had a request. Here now is 'The Girl From Iwo Jima'".

I play in a jazz trio (piano, bass, and drums). we take requests which as you guys know can be a little left fieldy. in the last month we have played our jazz interpretaions of free bird, piano man, sweet caroline, johnny be good, annd a few more. the trick is to know the tunes and your instrument so well that you can make them satisfied and play the music you love.

I have a friend that has a request menu. it has song titles and the suggested tip amount. He says that he has gotten $50 to play mustang sally on several occasions.

Once our bluegrass trio was wrapping up a late night and this drunk chick comes up and says "I wanna sing "Wagon Wheel". We said that we had already done it awhile back. "But it's my birthday!!" So we played it and she was really cute but she really could not sng a single note!

I've been playing Jazz for the last 15 years, and its pretty typical to hear these sort of things. On friday I was playing a patio gig with a Jazz Trio(Piano, Tenor, Bass), and a table was upset because we didn't play them any Journey tunes. Apparently as professionals we should know how to play every song ever written by anyone no matter what the style ;)

I knew the guys in a 'Blues Bros' style band and when they were playing one gig, a woman went up to the singer and asked if they played requests. He told her they didn't, but asked what she wanted to hear and asked her to write the songs on a napkin- it had 'Rollin' Down The River', 'Left A Good Job In The City' and 'Proud Mary'.
Three really good classics that they should have known.
