So what does a $25k bass actually get you?

If I spec'd out the Alembic of my dreams, it would probably come to that.
It would look like a piece of art, and play as good as it gets, and sound amazing.
IF I had a surplus of cash sure I would do it. But certainly other basses can meet that criteria
as well at a lesser cost.

I wish I had a spare $25k laying around to have to agonize over such a decision.

Thanks!I paid just a little more for this one....and can't believe I own it........It plays ok and sounds great, you get one chance in your life to own this and if you really want it, you have to buy it. that said I'd never pay that much for a new custom bass, they just don't do it for me

Bragging rights. And nothing else. Nowadays, the rolloff point, where you're just not going to get additional functional quality no matter how much you spend, seems to be about 7-8K.
Lets! Would be amusing. 25k on that end gets you a reasonably decent bass. Not symphony-level to be sure, but decent. The bow is going to be about another 25k.

Sorry I didn't explain.....It is the very first bass guitar ever made! in 1935 by Paul Tutmarc and given to me by his Grandson Gregg Tutmarc. how do you replace or value this?????

I won't pay 25K for a bass, because I like sleeping with my wife.
You get a bass.
25k $ is way too expensive for my taste but 5k to 8k is an acceptable price for a handcrafted instrument.
Do you wonder as well how much a classical musicien spend on violin ?
25k $ is like the start price for a violin.
How much is your car ? How much is your TV or your smartphone ?
What did i get with my bass ?
Well.... An instrument that is capable of doing anything, any sound and performs perfectly in every situation.
No matter the tool if the artist is creating, no matter the artist if the tool is made for creativity.

I feel fortunate that i'll likely never have to agonize over the many rediculous ways to flush money down the toilet

I don't know, but I'd rather spend it on new windows for my house. That way I'll be warm and dry while playing my "cheap" bass collection.
$25K? Geez, my SO gives me trouble if it's over a few hundred. Still trying to figure out how to break it to her that I ordered a Dingwall that costs over $2k... luckily, I have 11 more months to figure it out before the bass shows up.
Nothing that I can Imagine ,want or need. Most of the great music from the 60-70's were recorded on
Fenders costing $2-300. I bought a new fender jazz in 1973 for $241. Would you like all of those bands better if the bass player had some over priced boutigue bass that was not even around then...I highly doubt it...they rocked with what was available back then and still sounds amazing today...I.M.H.O. Today after going through alot of G.A.S. in the last 10 years...I have settled on Fender select and G&L tools. But hey what ever floats your boat...
