So, WHY does Chancellor use a CE-5?

Yeah, I did a search.

I am to the point of buying a Chorus for my set up. I have borrowed a friends Analogman chorus with deep switch and just found the tone to be incredible and lush.

But I look at a guy like Chancellor, and see he uses a CE-5. I know for pedals like the Boss Flanger there is a particular reason why he uses that pedal, but I have found no such reason given for the CE-5.

So, you Toolies out there, can you explain this? There is quite a delta in the price difference.

I remember my old boss chorus, I dunno if it was the CEB-5 or the CEB-3, had a low pass filter on it that basically made it so that only high notes would get the chorus effect, while low notes were un-affected, I don't know if the analogman has that effect or not, seeing as how I've never played one, but I do know that my Visual sound Liquid Chorus does not have that capability.

The other thing you have to remember is that Justin's sound is so processed by running through so many different effects, often simultaneously, as well as getting split at least once, maybe twice, that what may sound good on it's own to you may not sound very good in the amalgamation that is his signal path. There is a lot to consider when you buy a modulation pedal, especially a chorus.

That may or may not be what you're looking for, but that's my best guess as to why he uses it as opposed to another chorus.

Well the Analogman is based on the Small Clone, which is a warbly, watery sounding chorus, which is not the tone that Chancellor goes for. In the songs where he uses chorus, its usually for a really cold sound that has very little movement to it. That is what the Boss choruses excel at. The only other brand of chorus I can think of that does that cold tone with very little modulation well is the EHX Clone Theory.

Honestly, it's probably because it was the first chorus he picked up that he liked the sound of and has never bothered trying to find something better.

I've said this before, but there's a reason why so many of the "Pedalboards of the Stars" boards are devoid of boutique brand pedals. The vast majority of these guys find something that works and then with promoting/touring/recording etc don't have the time to be the kind of gearheads that many of us are.

Having had one for a bit I'd say the Eventide Pitchfactor is a big upgrade on the Bass Whammy, both in terms of whammy functions and all the other cool stuff it can do. But I wouldn't expect JC to switch because he's already got what works for him. Same thing with the CE-5. I'm sure if he invested the time and effort he could find a chorus he likes better, but there's really no strong motivation to do so if the Boss gets the job done.

One day all the bass whammy's will be broken, and he won't be able to find a new one... then he'll see the light!

I must not be communicating this well, because this isn't anything like the responses I was asking for.

In an interview I read, Chancellor said he used the BF-2 because he thought it acted like a hi-band flanger for bass, leaving the low end in tact while adding a ton of shimmer to the higher frequencies. Now, at that point in time he could have chosen other flangers, ones that many folks consider superior to the Boss. However he chose the BF-2 using that rationale.

So, has he ever given a rationale for the CE-5? There were many other chorus at the time available, some that at the time were considered superior.

If he never has, then no big deal. I was just wondering if any of the hardcore Tool fans knew.

And yes, "find my own sound" and all that. This has nothing to do with my own sound, my rig is much different. This is just a question regarding his.
