If you can solder, try out the Build Your Own Clone Stereo Flanger. According to them, it's an original design, not actually a clone. My guitar player and I did a lot of research on flangers, and this was by far the best to our ears on bass. You can opt to buy a different 2nd delay chip to deepen the effect, and that sounded the best to us as well.

Yes. They way I am using it, it works fantabulous!
I think the one improvement SA could make is to add blend knob.
I have the flanger in the TRS insert of the Growler's second channel. The wet signal is passed to the flanger and back. The SA flanger is a nice flanger, but it does seem to lose a little bit of low end. The wet signal from the Growler is a harmonic above the dry, thus, no low end to lose.
I have the volume of channel 2 at about 40%, so when I play that channel, you can hear this slight flanged wobble, without being too obvious. Not much call for flanger during liturgical music at a messianic synagogue.
So I have to be sneaky.

yeah, I have replaced my Boss with one of these. I have it in a loop with a clean blend so I can get some bottom back in. This is no issue cause it's flange tones are awesome, way better than the Boss or anything else I have tried. Also when you hot hand it, you can have lots of fun.
it really sucks not being able to try these pedals out in person with my bass and rig.....
Still have not pulled the trigger
but the more i watch and listen to demo after demo...I really like what i hear out of the TC Electronics Vortex....especially for the footprint and the price...it seems to be really really versatile...
also i like what i hear out of the MXR Micro as well...though it seems to be more of a one trick pony
would like to hear the toughts of people who have actually used these pedals
do the TC's really have that many QC issues?

Maxon FL-301. bought it because it was on ebay, and i was buying flangers at the time. kept it because it sounds less metallic than most flangers (like the BF-2, which i also have). it has a nice, rich tone to it.
I know you don't prefer Boss, but I really love my BF-2 that I picked up used for $40. Can't beat that. Not sure if you've tried the BF-2 but it's a much different beast than the sterile sounding BF-3. Please don't sigh or anything, I'm just throwing the BF-2 up for reconsideration.
If you're not afraid to build / mod / solder (or know someone who will do it for you), the BYOC (Build Your Own Clone) Stereo Flanger is gorgeous. My guitarist built one for himself, but didn't like it because it was too dark. I gave it a go, and it sounded perfect. "Chewy," "warm," "deep" - all of those great non-scientific words we use to talk about sound.
The kit normally comes with two delay chips of the same sort - they suggest upgrading one to deepen & intensify the sound. He did that, and it sounded much better than the stock version.
Also, while it is a BYOC pedal, they claim that it isn't actually a clone of anything, but rather is inspired by their favorite flanges.

i have a vortex. not really digging it. something too glossy yet stair step about the sweep. i'm trying it on other sources before deciding to sell. the flangers i've loved had a gritty smooth sweep. the fattest flanger i've ever heard is the old blue rack mount MXR Flanger/Doubler, it was incredible.
i also have a MXR Micro Flanger & while it does a nice mellow chorusy sweep on clean tones, it has a volume boost & distorts unpleasantly when placed after high gain dirt pedals, so no jet engines. i'm using it early on so it's not a problem on that board.
