When do you get REALLY excited about a custom bass?

The deal is sealed, e-mails are exchanged, specs are handled... oh there will be some final decisions and possible twists in the road as you move along, but in 6-12 months it will be yours.

When do you get excited?

Good question. My journey started with Carey Nordstrand in December of 2004. I was EXTREMELY excited then. December of 2005 came, and I was more anxious than excited, and I was second guessing a million decisions.

2006, I had just about put it completely out of my mind until I got a call from Carey last month asking about some specifics and making a recommendation about body woods. I am totally amped up again. I think I have 2-3 months to go.

It's a giant sine wave, the period of which is determined by your level of patience and your personality type.

The best possible thing you could do would be to completely forget about it. I've ordered two customs. The wait for the second one was much easier because I wasn't thinking about it night and day.

Very few luthiers have a wait time like that. Between 4-12 months seems to be the average for most luthiers.

Good Thread ! I am waiting on my first truly 100% custom designed bass right now and I think the excitement grows with each passing month although writing up the specs had its own certain excitement. I have never played or physicaly seen an instrument built by the Luthier crafting my bass so I am just going by the reputation I can gather from the internet.

Well, when I ordered mine I was super excited about it at first. Then, I tried to put it out of my head to alleviate the wait anxiety. Then, after the first "promised finish" date passed I started to become really anxious.

It's been almost 7 months since the order and when I got the first pics of it almost finished last week I got super amped, pretty much the way I felt when I first ordered it. I'm sure this feeling will continue untill I whip out the checkbook to pay the balance of the order. Only time will tell.....

i get more and more excited until it peaks and i explode, not in a good way, but more so in a dead b string kind of way.

I've got my second custom on order (Roscoe SKB 3006) I was very excited upon ordering it, but in the relatively short time since the picking of woods, specs, etc. I've cooled off some. I'm sure that those first progress picks from Gard will start me up again. In the meanwhile I second guess my descisions. I can't imagine what its like for someone waiting over two years. :eek:

The first custom I ordered (Modulus VJ4) was easy, I ordered it, the dealer told me 6 months, no progress reports (not sure if Modulus gives progress reports/pics, never asked I guess) three months later, SUPRISE it's done.

I think the Roscoe might be the end of the custom ordered basses......unless I get a fretless Lull, or a Elrick singlecut, or a Dingwall... :help: :help:

I just ordered a G & L lefty ASAT last week, and the minute I forked over my dough for the deposit to get the order started was when I was really got excited. It was such a relief after all of the months of not being able to make a decision on the color or body style once I put my money where my mouth was...

was my Carvin lb70p. To those who suggest it's not a custom bass :spit: :D
I still had to wait 3 months. I picked the woods and color.:eyebrow:
Then, sometime down the road, I felt the need to send it back for repairs to fix the on going fret problem, like they were poking out the sides evidenced by the clear coat popping off the sides and the constant neck adjustments. They got it back to me soon enough but with a gouge in the body :mad: .
Long story made short, I don't see the need for a custom in my life. There's plenty of different basses to choose from that can be modded to taste.

not a real custom bass - but I was the first person to order a 2 pickup MusicMan (when they started the 2 pup rays and sterlings). it was an HS Sterling... it took about 6 months to get the bass and id have to say getting it was the most exciting part. while placing the order i knew it would be a while before i got it considering the order window opened up before production started so i kinda held back the escitement.
