Soccer is usually the "fun, less competitive, positive sport" of choice among suburban American mothers.

1. Minimal expenses for equipment and facilities

2. Sufficiently popular that you can find a league for your kids that doesn't involve driving hundreds of miles per week

3. For now, minimal interest in the sport at the college and pro levels

4. Perceived as less dangerous

This was extremely upsetting to us as my grandson was invited to play in Spain and Portugal. They arrived home today safely . He was in the U13 division. One of the comments he made was the other team they had played, some of the players were crying after their win because they only won by 2 points. They were really upset. Didn't really like Americans and thought they were so much better. Scary!!!!! These are 12 and 13 yo kids.

At least you weren't in Brazil!

Brazil is one of the most dangerous places you can live....If it wasnt for the large populous it would probably have the highest murder rate per capita in the world. I believe it is also close to top 10 for crime

I've seen a clip from a Brazilian news channel showing them putting him back together like a jigsaw.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. You were saying that the per capita murder rate would be higher if the population wasn't so large. That's true, but also a strange argument. You'd have to assume that the number of murders stayed the same, e.g. you reduced the population, but all the murderers remained.

It's changing one variable in an equation, assuming the other stays equal, and saying that the result changes. Of course it does. You could also say that if there were more murders it would have a higher per capita murder rate.

back on topic, kind of - Brazil has a reputation for crime but i did not experience that in the slightest when i visited there. we were staying not far from the hometown of the unfortunate referee (well, next district along).

then again, i didn't go near any football matches...
