Double Bass some feedback: standards

I noticed some people are posting their recordings for a feedback and constructive criticism. I was wondering what people would think of some of my recently recorded standards for a project in school. Each track features a different soloist, my good friends, and I also play piano and guitar. Drums/percussion was sampled so as to be in click.

Files are in mp3, 320Kbps, 44.100KHz. Thanks!

Hey, thanks for listening! I was using my old Kohr plywood with a Realist pickup directly into the MOTU a/d interface. I eq'd a lot to give it some definition, particularly some highs and lows, not so much mids.

Sounds good, overall.

Comments:

Why'd you go direct with this group(s)? These are very low-volume ensembles.

If you aren't getting much support for your solos from your bandmates, you have to accompany yourself. You can do this a number of ways, but one thing that you can do is to play notier lines that outline the changes (and groove) well.

I like that you are independent with your pitch -- meaning that you play in tune with yourself even if the other instruments are out (piano/guitar) or the horn is sharp. I'd really like to hear your real tone. The center of pitch from the Realist sound is a little dubious, but it sounds like you're nailing things well and it would sound so much nicer to hear the bass sound rather than the piezo.

The endings are a little weak on your arrangements. Especially for a submission for a grade or audition, you gotta make the entrances and exits clean and intentional.

Your feel is nice and solid, although you let the other guys push you around a bit. I would recommend that you lay it down for them rather than 'trying to get along'.

to bassist14: thanks for listening and for your kind comments. That sort of atmospheric texture is what I had in mind kind of, I'm glad you enjoyed listening. peace.

to Ray, thanks for checking the stuff out, man. your references to pitch and accompaniment are on the dime. I had to make a lot of compromises that limit functionality of these recordings. Had to cut some corners... oh well. The experience, like they say, was priceless. As far as the interaction between "the band" goes, I was pretty much laying all the parts myself except for the soloists, so I think I was worrying about something else at the time. The decision to record direct was caused by the noise at the MIDI lab where I was recording.

Thanks for the comments guys.
