Weather Report always seemed to be able to enlist more than its fair share of notable bassists: Clark, Johnson, Pastorius, Vitouš…mmm…ok, maybe not him so much.

Miroslav Vitous was a founding member with Zawinul and Shorter. They created a production company called Shoviza, but Zawinul pushed Vitous out of the partnership. Miroslav wasn’t a great funk player but I wouldn’t diss him. The never released in the US Live in Tokyo album (a severe edit of this was used as side 2 of “I Sing The Body Electric”) shows the original lineup could burn it down.

The Miroslav edition of Weather Report was more in keeping with the openness of Bitches Brew. I always dug his playing in that period, using a wah and distortion on the upright. I dig every period of WB, with the Alphonso years as my favorite.

Miroslav wasn’t a great funk player but I wouldn’t diss him

I can only speak for myself and my own personal tastes. I liked him more early on in in his career. He’s a fine bass player. Just not my cuppa.

Regarding being born with a lack of talent...
Started playing baseball at 9 they traded me down to T-Ball (okok not a trade per se)...
Got a great coach in my 2nd year taught me how to bunt. Earned an almost respectable .176 batting average.
My 3rd year the 11 year olds were learning to throw an inside curve to this lefty. .032 batting average (think I got one successful bunt).
The following year I got a guitar.
I have no talent for Sportsball.

Regarding being born with a lack of talent...

This makes me think of my history with baseball. I have some athletic ability. I could kick field goals over 50 yards straight on (never learned soccer style.) I was also pretty strong, I could lift 505lbs off a bench without a spot, and I had speed for a kid who 256lbs in 9th grade. That said, my bat speed and eye/hand coordination was sad. I had one home run and one double in four years of baseball. It was actually a relief when I realized I realized I simply had no talent when I played in a charity game as a young professor. That said, I almost got on base with a bunt!

I try not to watch too many youtube bass virtuosos. Partic when they kids, which rubs the salt in even more imho. There's only so many times you can fish your bass out of the garbage bin he he.
