Rocco Prestia in Tower of Power is absolutely amazing. I'd grab their anthology.

Maceo Parker is another fav of mine. I'd grab Life on Planet Groove its a live album but its 10x better than his studio stuff.

The CD is called "In the Jungle Groove". A must for any JB afficianado.

Man I should've mentioned AWB. How could I forget these guys? They had some of the most ridiculuosly funky basslines in exsistance, how about "School Boy Crush".

"Play That Funky Music White Boy" was originally recorded by Wild Cherry in 1976. I don't know about the other one.

Do you mean the song "war" recorded by Edwin Star or the great funk group, War? War was a great band with great musicians. Their original bassist, B.B. Dickerson (Dickinson?) was super tight and in the groove using fingerstyle.

James Brown's - 'Motherlode' will sit nicely next to 'In the Jungle Groove'. Both albums have some of the funkiest, tightest and just plain baddest grooves ever!

speaking of Jungle, Kool & The Gangs "Jungle Boogie" was a bass anthem back in the day before they became a disco group. The bass solo/break was real funky.

Curtis Mayfield - Superfly , Roots and Curtis/live! are some of my favorite funk albums by a true great.

also if you don't mind some quirky white boy with your funk check out the Talking Heads - The Name of this Band is Talking Heads live album. Its the heads plus Adrian Belew and a FUNKY rythmn section featuring Bernie Worrell , BustaCherry Jones on bass, and some crazy African percussionists. My favorite Talking Heads recording. And if you like it then Remain in Light is pretty funky too.

Ohio players O.H.I.O album still blows me away, as do the other albums such as Fire, Contradiction and Honey, all featuring the incredible Marshall "Jones" Jones doing all the great basslines. I still can't figure out " Far east Mississippi"

i've been listening to alot of metres today to see what they were like, and they r awsome, very groovy bass, and love the guitar, also tower of power is awsome aswell, very funky, thx for the recomendations, i can never have to much funk lol

have any of you's heard of a song called i want you? it was supposedly a brothers johnson song but i dont think it was, but it had very very good bass line, sounded like he was slaping the notes but it wasnt fast, it was slow and nice, but anyway i havnt been able to find this song again, and everything on my comp got wiped a while back so i hvant been able to get it again, becouse i dont no who its by, but i learnt the bass line so thats all i have to listen to it lol, does anyone no what i'm talking about?

and i did snoop dog do a cover of atomic dog? instead of snoop dog its funk dog, or did they cover him

Back in AWB's heyday('76 or so), Downbeat mag had them on the cover...there was much discussion about AWB NOT being a Funk band or even funky(?).
IIRC, Alan Gorrie kind of agreed...AWB were R&B/Soul, everything was tight & played in time.
Nevertheless, Cut The Cake is a great album. "Groovin' The Night Away"!

"Love Your Life" from Soul Searching & "Your Love Is A Miracle" from Warmer Communications sure sound Funky to me.
