Some Tips for planning a healthy , resilient band dynamic

How these ideas are presented and communicated matters. Nobody said anything about band meetings or power point presentations, that stuff always triggers the resistance in most people. Everyone rolls there eyes at corporate mission statements or required HR compliance training.

Yet these ideas are important and useful to have considered, so how do we communicate them without "scaring most musicians away"? A coherent goal, a plan to get there, and thoughtful consideration about individual ownership isn't going to just happen naturally in most cases. I wouldn't suggest printing this thread out and passing around These tips are stuff to keep in mind and bring up a little at a time in between tunes. It can be a casual conversation presented as obvious no brainer stuff "of course we all know this already, but we should..." the point is to actually have the conversation. The little note about "let's plan to..." vs "let's agree to..." is a suggestion about how to smoothly communicate these ideas. There is a craft , a strategy, to bringing people around and into alignment (Leadership, I guess)

Also, the first person to implement any of the "tips" should be me, of course.

wouldn't you rather not be a dick in a band with an understood, coherent goal and a mutual plan to get there?

If everyone adheres to that rule, there will be no issues. Goals are often fluid. Plans change. As long as no one is a dick, there will not be an issue with this.

Sounds like you were in the band I was in for 20 years. The drummer was the BL, pretended it was a band, but may God have mercy on your soul if you ever disagreed with something he did or said. Never worked with anyone so ruthless and deceptive. And we were just a glorified bar band who happened to have some semi-prestigious gigs with acts from the 50's, 60's and 70's.

sounds like a very Evil Lead Singer I was with for 7 years. Comes across as the nicest guy on the planet, but he just lies and lies and lies. Ego as big as the grand canyon. Great gigs, but he was a lying, selfish POS. I'm glad i haven't run into him since. I would still like to punch him in the face. lol. I have a long memory

Agree with this as well. it needs to take place maybe not in that form but in some fashion.

Here's a maybe new development:
Politics. Years ago (10-15?) you could be in a band with folks who thought differently about how the world should run and we all knew how to talk about things without making the other guy mad. Nowadays we have folks labeling other folks with nasty names simply because of disagreement. I see it here sometimes too.
Maybe we have to add No Discussion Of Politics to that list.

AND I don't mean to start a discussion about anyone's political beliefs here. We all know where that leads....which kinda supports my point. Sadly.

If you join as the last member of an existing vanity project,* you may be considered more of a friendly hired gun than a true part of the band.

This is especially true if there's misalignment among goals, talent, motivation, importance of band, knowledge of "rehearsal" vs "practice" difference, etc.
_____
*For example: BL funds equipment, converts building of family business into swank rehearsal studio; plays a half dozen guitars but wouldn't pass another band's RG audition...you know the type.
