I play to the best of my ability, I have no issues with others playing better than me as long as I am true to myself and doing best. I am happy in my own skin that being said.... where's that Tonya Harding when you need her ha ha ha

Practice makes perfect, it's the only way around it. That's what the guy you're listening to did. I can guarantee it.

Whenever I encountered a musician in my early life that was substantially more "gifted" than I, I asked them about how much they practiced. The answer was always....more than I practiced. So, a decade ago, when I re-started playing after a decade off due to wrist issues, I decided I'd practice a lot.

It takes a lot of practice to appear naturally gifted.

I enjoy the music. Isn't that what we're supposed to do? Just sayin...

There are 7 billion people in the world. The US has about 300 million.
Statistically, the best bass players are not in the US. They just don't know it yet.

Well this is the World Wide Web. Why single out the US?
Bass playing is not a competition for me. Sure I see players that amaze me but I sit back and enjoy..
I am inspired to play every day with occasional periods of down time to rejuvenate.
Then I come back a little stronger than before.

The important thing is to find other players and make music.

What do you do when you see someone play better than you?

I rarely meet someone who plays worse than me, so I just got used to it.

To be honest, I find someone really impressive to inspire me to "try" and figure out how to do what they were doing... or at least try to add a couple of token nods toward their licks into my own playing.

The more I read of folks to want to quit when they see someone doing something amazing, the more I am relieved that I don't get that same reaction - it would be really tough to feel that way!

i voted "get motivated and practice" but really, when i see a player with amazing technical skill, i usually just give them a compliment and don't change a thing about my own routine. i am me, they are them, music is not a competitive sport.

It is a combo of A and B.
However, the music matters. If someone is playing something I don't like, but playing it well, F 'em. Let them have that rubbish gig.
There are a lot of better bass players than me. That doesn't bother me. It only matters if they they are doing something I want to be doing.
