New guy here, signed up a month ago. Been reading the mail to get a feel for the room, ready to jump in. When two hobbies merge one can come up with something like this! A bit of coin/silver collector, could not resist this! I've got two basses, both jazz. Squire vintage 70's vibe and a 75th anniversary. Rumble 40 amp. Been back on the bass seriously for about a year after a too long hiatis! Enough with the intro here are some pics of the pick! HA

Huh. What kinda sound you get? I know Brian May uses a sixpence on guitar, and I once tried a quarter, but I don’t remember much about the results.
Well, a very metalic sound to say the least, you can imagine.. I'll have to compare it to a regular pick. This is the first time I've even tried a pick so I am no good judge. But it is fun. Sounds to me like I'm trying to saw the strings in half!

I have tried using a coin as a pick once, and as far as I am concerned metal is not suited pick material, sounds horrible when it hits the strings.

I know that there are actually some metal picks on the market but it's beyond me how anyone would consider the tone using them results in anything else but absolutely horrible.

I also assume Fender made this more as an collectors item than an actual real tool used to pick stringed instruments with, I could be wrong though.

Personally I wouldn't use it for that at least, and to me it would be complete waste of money, though I guess if you are a big Fender fan then it will have value as a collectable item.

I generally use stainless steel when I use a pick (what can I say I love the clang). I can’t imagine this would sound too much different?

From what I understand silver is a relatively soft metal, wouldn’t it deform over time? Especially if played on stainless steel strings?

I don't see the hole.
Paul McCartney uses pennies ran over by a train.
Brian May uses a 6 pence.
Billy Gibbons I've heard uses a mexican peso.
Dee Dee Ramone used a matta.

They are made of some secret sauce of plastic, nylon or other worldly material that mimics tortoise shell.

Was clearing out a back room at my first music store job back in 1985. They’d bought up a bunch of unsold/unsalable inventory from our other store, the one that had been around since the early sixties. Found a tray with some real, handmade tortoiseshell picks. Still have one, somewhere in the garage rafters. The look was stunning, performance not so much. Closest thing to it I’ve found are the “water Buffalo horn” picks you can find out there. Your standard issue Fender picks are far better. Or Dunlop gels, or whatever you use. I only use picks on guitar, can’t stand them on bass.

But if you were a REAL coin collector you would’ve never opened that. Now you’ve gone and circulated it!! :hyper:

It sure is shiny. I’d be interested to try one but I don’t think I’m interested to buy one. Welcome to the board!
