Something wise i found over the internet.

This thread is a load of crap. Tone is all in the equipment. Fingers mean nothing.

I hope you're right. I've spent well over $20,000 in the last few years trying to find the perfect tone. Never once have I considered improving my playing skills or technique.

Somewhere out there is an amp/cab combo that will make me one of the best bass players in the world.

Youve still got a ways to go. You don't get the perfect tone til youve spent $42,000...

Now then, now then, now then, if you are looking for tone, this is how you do it. You go to a crossroads at midnight, there will be a shadowy silhouette there waiting, it is the magic burger van that Robert Johnson got his skills from ; )

But on a more helpful note, discount the bass, discount the amp, your finger pads are a big effect on tone and attack. How much flesh you put in contact with the string, how hard your callouses are, if you've just jumped out of the shower (pads are softened up), the velocity, where along the string you pluck (back, front, somewhere in between) and what kind of touch you have with the left hand too.

A lot of tone is in the fingers and touch, but you do need good gear to replicate and articulate that and something you find comfortable and familiar to play on.
