what famous songs are purely based on the major scale? am learning to transcribe music by ear and would like to stick to the major scale. so it will be really cool if you guys could help me make a list

Ruby Soho by Rancid is great for major scales (at least from what I remember)...
It starts off by just hitting every note in the descending G major, and when you hit the 1 (the low G; 3rd fret 'E'-string), you just switch to an ascending G major where you hit the 3rd and the 5th of the first four notes.

But any songs with Dominant 7th chords, will introduce notes that are not in the major scale...
So I'm sure that Rock and Roll songs have 7th chords - doesn't Rock Around the Clock have an E7 ....?

If you're in A, all of the notes of the E7 chord are diatonic to the A major scale.

Hint. Playing by ear as taught by PianoMagic. Get the key - get the melody note to the first lyric word. What chord is used under the first word, the melody note will be one of the chord tones.
Lets say the song is in C the first chord is C and the first word is "How" say how and sound the C note, then the E note then the G note, I bet one of them will sound better than the others - that's your starting note.
Next word - same process...... After you get the first word it's a piece of cake after that. The other melody notes are just up scale or down scale -- douggah. If you have a keyboard it will be much easier on the keyboard than on your fretboard.
