Songs for my final exam!

I know, in the first part of the exam (the jury one) I'll maybe play Donna Lee, which as I know is from Miles Davis and certainly not for bass. I wrote ¨bass song¨ meaning a song that I can play with my bass.( sorry if it wasn't clear haha).

Asking to your question, I can take more musicians with me for the song.
The instruments that my friends play are:
(pianox2(all styles) ;
drumsx2(jazz and rock with double pedal);
guitarx3 (no jazz but we can arrange that);
another bass (if you have a crazy idea);
Trumpet
Horn
Tuba

My gear is:
-Marcus Miller v7
-Ibanez gsr200 maybe Fretless
-sub n up octaver pedal
-aftershock bass pedal (fuzz with a lot of options)
- Y box from fender
-Loop pedal from boss (the third versionIi think)

Here is what I would do. Get a pianist and drummer to accompany you. Start in playing the bass part in the intro, then switch to playing the melody. Let the left hand of the pianoplay the bass part while you play the melody and solo. Ease back into the bass part for the end. Maybe something like Some Day My Prince Will Come.

Stop thinking just like a bass player. Think like a soloing musician.

This is a perfect suggestion. I dream about doing this kind of things but I think that I haven't the skills yet for huge jazz impros. Anyway this year I want to improve that so I hope I'll be able to do this at the end of the year.
If I achieve this I will post it here. Thanks again for your messages and advices!!;)

It doesn't have to be jazz. But think outside the box. :thumbsup:

If you wanna slap, almost any RHCP up to One Hot Minute will do the trick - "Aeroplane," "Knock Me Down," "Subway to Venus," etc.



If you want a trio, XYZ:



If you want outside the box insanity, The Mars Volta can get real bonkers real quick:

I have two thoughts, and it's entirely possible they are both too far out of the box.

Idea 1: a simple fairly new pop or modern rock song that is driven by the bass, but doesn't necessarily feature the bass line like a solo. Show that you can play a repetitive line, staying in the pocket and being the necessary foundation to help move the groove along. What you don't play sometimes is just as important as what you do play.

2: Get your bass brethren together and come up with an arrangement of "Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap. Maybe all of you could use this as your live performance segment of the exam....

Just some thoughts, and maybe dumb ones, but I wish you luck and good fortune as you embark on your musical career.

Don't go for clever on the crowd test. Playing something slick that only 5 people get is not the object here. You are being judged on performance as well as chops. Pick something that most people will recognize and groove to. Do you get to have a band with you for the 2nd part, or is it just you playing and (possibly)singing ? Big Bottom mentioned above is not as crazy as it sounds. Something from the Blues Brothers, ro a song like Radar Love comes to mind. Make it fun for the crowd

In a way it's true that I have to play something ¨easy¨to be enjoyable for everybody, but in the other way every musician do his performance so each one have to do a piece where his instrument is the most important.

I have two examns, one in front of a jury ( I'll play Donna Lee) and another in front of a public. I need something for the public. Something mainstream but cool (with skills, slap or something)
