I don't think I saw anyone mention Bad, Bad Leroy Brown. Talk about one to stay away from. I was in a wedding band years ago that used to play it, and it was awful.

Songs or Covers To Avoid Playing?

Rock n Roll by Zep and freebird. When I used to play in a cover band I would let a bass player I knew who was always in the crowd come up and play those two songs.
I'm scratching my head while reading all these posts saying to not play Freebird.
Maybe you guys don't have a guitarist that has what it takes to "pull it off"...maybe you've played it too many times, or maybe you just don't like that song.
But my experience tells me to always end the night with Freebird. Why? Because,
by 1:30(at least in California), everybody's loaded and last call is only 15 minutes away...you wanna go out with a bang.
What better than a dynamic, overdramatic power ballad with a never-ending finale that everybody knows by heart to send your audience home with?
But I do whole-heartedly agree...please don't play it sloppy. People will notice.
Do try to cover the Pretender's "Chain Gang".
It's the secret song all girls love.

...Crosby Stills & Nash sounds great IF you've got the harmonies to pull it off. If your band can't do a credible three-part harmony, forget it.
We do Marrakesh Express in three part harmony with a flute, and it sounds great.
But I agree that there are songs by that band that make me gag. Our House makes me want to strangle kittens. Oh, wait, I like to strangle kittens anyway....

I may seem stupid here, but why not cover these songs? Whats the reason? Is it that they were done too well the first time, and trying to re do it would be disrespectful?
