Songs you refuse to learn...

I used to resist learning songs that I thought I was not interested in but eventually my attitude changed as I discovered that on many occasions, songs that the band or singer wanted to do were actually much more interesting and sometimes more challenging that I would have thought. Now I look forward to "discovering" interesting music that I might not have otherwise bothered to examine or was not aware of. I guess variety IS the spice of lifer after all. Who knew? ;<) These days I'm totally open to trying anything. Especially if it is a song I do not know. Played with a couple of female singers a few years ago and developed a new respect for female artists I would have never bothered to learn much less listen to. Go figure right?

I'll learn anything .......I also host a local open mic where i have to learn many songs on the spot to back up the jammers including songs that I would never even think about learning on my own. One of the guitarist in my cover band refused to play any Michael Jackson songs. Says playing Michael Jackson songs is against everything that he stands for. What ever that means. My other guitarist is Hispanic and refuses play any Santana songs.....says he doesn't want to be stereotype as an "Hispanic guitarist"....what ever that means. So far we have been able to be successful in our local market without doing Michael Jackson or Santana.

I have never refused to learn a song. There have been some songs that I might not like as much as others but as long as we all have equal input into the song selection, I am fine with it.

The best way to make sure that you do not have to play songs which you do not like is to not join a band that plays a genre that you do not like. I am primarily a blues based rock player but also do a little country and jazz. I would never join a band that plays rap, hip hop, doom/stoner, etc because I do not enjoy those styles.

The cover band I'm in plays Disco Inferno, Get Down Tonight, I Will Survive, Stayin' Alive, Hot Stuff, a few more. Always fill the dance floor.


The keyboardist from that band has a second band that plays a bunch of old standards, "crooner" stuff - Sinatra, Dean Martin, Michael Buble versions of old stuff, etc. These has been a challenge for me, an old rock and blues player. Really expanded my horizons and got me more interested in learning how to REALLY play walking bass lines.

Someone mentioned not liking tuba songs - here's a cool tuba song I always liked. Used to play one in high school, would like to take it up again.

I've always been a believer that women want to dance and men want to drink and watch the women dance. If you can get women dancing, you will get a reputation for being a good band and usually generate a good following.

2/3 of the songs we play have been in these "songs I refuse to play" threads :eek: Now - I'm not totally happy with the set list - but I'm not the band leader. And we seem to get plenty of bookings.

I just can't imagine quitting a band because they played Free Bird - :rollno:

One thing I've found is that, as a newly-minted multi-instrumentalist (been taking gigs on both guitar and drums lately), tunes that I used to HAAAAAATE on bass (a lot of modern pop, overplayed classics, etc) I end up loving on another instrument. I've been getting into some cheezy modern pop that I would probably never play on bass, but on drums they're actually kind of fun.

I might be a little weird though. Your mileage may vary...
