Sonic Maximizer for Bass

Aphex Exciter. PA guys used to use them to try and throw more clarity down a long room from their cheap PA systems.
Good riddance to both!

Used an Aphex 204 in my rack for a while back in the 90's. It was fun to play with while just noodling around by myself, but it had the sonic clarity of wet clay in a live band mix. In hindsight, I chalk it up to my own ineptness regarding the subtle art of signal processing. (i.e. anything worth doing is worth overdoing.) It did prove useful during a final mix for a session I was doing in the early 2000's.

Knowing what I know now, I would probably make better use of it. That said, knowing what I know now, I probably wouldn't have bought one in the first place.

As a bass player 100% driven by ego, it was the magic sauce that made my BBE 383 preamp sound good.

I’ve moved onto a new drug now: my harmonic booster pedal.

I have the earlier 104. Like the SM, it's better used as an FOH insert. I used the kick drum to set the "big bottom" threshold then set the level so it wasn't stomping the mix. Never fully got a handle on the Aural Exciter but that's for lack of effort on my part. I may just re-install to blow the carbon out of the valves. Manual attached below.
