Sound is coming from the E string

I put strings (rotosound rs66le( heavy gauge)) on my Squier PJ affinity and lowered the action, even though I muted the e string (I put my thumb on it), there is a sound coming from the e string when I play the a string( when played fastly-my fingers touch e string) what could be the reason?

If you listen to carefully, you can hear the note E in the 1st octave.

I can’t make this play. Unfortunately, audio clips don’t seem to work. Maybe it’s the new forum software

But based on what you said, have you tried actually holding the E string with your fretting hand and plucking the others with your free hand to see if you still get that sound? Just as a matter of troubleshooting

My best guess atm is that maybe the pickup is picking up some body resonance and amplifying it? Either that, or when you’re playing, you’re not muting as well as you think

I didn't have this problem with the old medium gauge strings, I just lowered the action

you changed strings and lowered action. have you lowered your pickup height too? otherwise your string are now closer to the pickup. When you lower the action you also need to lower the pickup to maintain the same distance between pickup and strings.

No way of knowing yet and the clip doesn’t play, but it’s not unusual to get resonant anomalies. The 2 points of contact, bridge and nut are the 2 main suspects. Beyond that sometimes other things will rattle , truss rod , springs etc etc. last suspect is a bad string. This could be bad right out of the package or made bad during installation. Like twisting it’s windings,that can happen if you hand wrap around the post and twist the string against itself. That is also a possibility. I would pop another string on. Try the old one again if you have it. And try to isolate its source. Usually you get a sitar effect if there is a burr on the contact points. Or a weird tone.

Most likely is that your thumb is on a harmonic node of your E string, so your string isn't muted for that harmonic which will vibrate in sympathy with the ambient sound. If you hear a B, you're on the 1/3 string lenght node, if you hear a E, you're on the 1/4 node.

My guess is, with the lighter strings and lower action, when you put your thumb on the E string to mute it, you're inadvertently pressing too hard on the E string and it's coming in contact with the pickup and making noise.

Stop the string in a different spot
Or mute using the other hand

There is no problem in slow tempo, but in fast tempo the low E sound suddenly to be heard

I couldn't explain the problem exactly, the strings are heavy, when I play the A string, the sound comes from E even though I mute the E string (at high tempo)

If it only happens at speed then it has to be technique related
when you play fast you must be doing something different

I know when I get obsessed with speed my right hand stops muting as effectively vs if I play more slowly
usually my right hand is damping the higher pitched strings above what I am plucking
If I don't mute they resonate freely with the pitch

I'd pay attention to left and right hands and figure out what changes with my hands as I play faster

The problem is in the technique, I noticed that when the right hand speeds up, thumb occasionally loses contact with the string. Thanks
