Hi. I did the posting for the copper tube/steel cable tool. In my research for setting the sound post, I found that the grain of the post is supposed to be perpendicular to the grain of the top. Of course, if the post is bevelled, the bevels have to be in the correct direction with respect to the slope of the top and bottom faces of the instrument. The upper end of the post is not normally directly underneath the foot of the bridge, but offset towards the bottom of the instrument. I initially located the post under the foot of the bridge, and it killed the sound. I moved it about about 3/4" down from the foot, and the sound is much much better.
