Soundcard problems

This makes zero sense. My computer was upstairs. I turned it off, unplugged it, brought it downstairs, plugged it in... now the soundcard doesn't work. I can't even open up Volume Control.... is there a way I can unistall my soundcard/drivers and reinstall them? Device Manager won't let me.

I have a PC by the way.

Could you be a little more specific as to which type of PC you have? Saying "I have a PC" is like saying "I play a bass", leaves a lot of questions in the air...

I would do a system restore to the closest date to today and see if that works, and if not you can always undo that restore

Before I go into any more detail, go to control panel / sound and audio / audio tab -- make sure that devices are place for the playback, recording, etc.

Also, go into the hardware tab and make sure it says everything is working properly.

After you did all of this, post again.

And what soundcard brand/model? Internal or external? Onboard or not?

Onboard? Does that mean inside the computer? It's one that came with my computer, here's the info in the sound driver section:

Audio Codecs
Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Devices


It says everything in the device manager everything is fine...

Onboard means implemented onto the motherboard, which is what you seem to have.

Try restarting the computer, make sure everything is plugged in correctly, if that doesnt work, google for Legacy Audio Drivers, download, reinstall, restart, and try again.

You might try uninstalling your card (via the Device Manager) then rebooting to see if it autodetects it and re-installs the drivers.

Oh, it's not onboard, I've opened up my computer before.

Normally I'd suggest taking the card out and putting it back in to make sure it's seated right, but Windows should be telling you there's a problem if it's not.

Are you 100% sure there is an actual soundcard in a PCI slot? Because AC '97 codecs are for onboard soundcards usually...

I agree about the AC 97 thing, it's a codec for inbuilt soundcards. If you have an additional sound card, what model/make is it?

I must have an additional soundcard, because I can physically remove my soundcard from the PCI slot.

Something must have got messed up during the "move."

Just curious, I'm not ready to jump to it yet, but how do you do the system restore?

It was weird, it was working fine, I shut down, unplugged, moved it downstairs... no sound.

I'll try some stuff, then bump this thread if I need more help... or to let you know I got it working.
