Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

He's answering a general question, the Reflex isn't even complete at Source Audio HQ yet per this thread.

I understand that the Reflex isn't available yet; I misinterpreted the question to be about the Reflex given the recent context, but looking at it again I can see it was probably general.

Yes, each Hub preset can save unique EXP/HH control settings for each pedal.

Yes, just change Hub presets and voila!

To keep the gears churning the Hub also lets you control ALL of your SB2 pedals simultaneously with EXP/HH. Each pedal in the Hub scene can have it's own unique control setup. Sweep the filter frequency on the Manta while also controlling the Reverb Send on the Dimension and Drive on the OFD. With one expression. All saved forever in a preset. Which you can then share with the community. :)
Sweet, thank you!

Can this be done without the hub too? (Can you store expression pedal functions directly into the Soundblox 2 presets?)

I don't have a controller connected to the Hub yet so I can't test this myself, but maybe someone knows the answer?

Scenario: Let's say I want a phaser preset that I can turn on and off during a song by stepping on one of the bypass/preset switches on the pedal, called up via a scene by sending a program change to the Hub.

If I start from a preset in a pedal, tweak a bunch of settings for a new sound, save to a scene in the Hub and then stomp the pedal off and on again, do I end up with the settings from the Hub or from the previous preset in the pedal?

What I guess I'm asking, do I need to first save the tweaked settings as a preset in the pedal before saving the scene?

If i understand your question: no.

2 pedal presets are stored in the pedal itself. When you stomp on either pedal button, you will get one of those 2 presets respectively.

The HUB presets are not accessed by the SB2 pedals
They are aceesed via midi (or one scene on the button on topmof the HUB itself).

No one is testing reflex yet.
This is a general answer to using expression pedals with SB2 and/or expression pedals with SB2 and Hub.

Yeah, as I said above, I misinterpreted the question based on a faulty application of context. I'm just too excited for this product, that I have it on the brain!

I've tested a bit now and can't quite get the pedals to work like I want to ... is it possible to set it up so the preset buttons on the pedals act like bypass buttons for the activated scene, or can they only recall the presets last saved in the pedal?

I sort of expected the scenes to contain the pedal's presets as well, but it looks like they only contain a snapshot of the currently active settings. If I understand that correctly, do I have to recall a different scene (or send the right CC to the pedal) to turn the effect on and off like you would by using the bypass switch on a traditional pedal?

I think it would be nice if the scenes also included the presets.

Well that kind of sucks ... that really means that for my intended use I only have two presets per pedal, not bad but not what I thought was possible. It would take a more advanced controller then. I'm cancelling my SA pedalboard plans for now.

If Source could do something better with the HUB, I think it would be to better advertise that a seperate midi controller is NECESSARY in order to get full functionality from the HUB. FretNoMore's expectations of how he could use the HUB are evidence of this. Not to knock SA, I understood this going in, but it gets asked enough to indicate it may not be clear enough for all.

The easy way to think of it, FretNo', is that:
- SB2 pedals have 2 preset buttons which store 2 sets of knob settings, respectively. The SB2 is not a midi controller (see next point).
- The HUB stores up to 128 sets of knob settings, instantly recallable with a separate midi controller (such as a midi mouse, software solution, midi keyboard, etc.).

Scenario: Let's say I want a phaser preset that I can turn on and off during a song by stepping on one of the bypass/preset switches on the pedal, called up via a scene by sending a program change to the Hub.

This isn't how the Hub works. Understandably it can be a little confusing to comprehend the workflow at first.

STEP1: You want to start rocking out with your awesome phaser sound. Simply recall a saved scene from the Hub that has your phaser setting by sending MIDI PC to the Hub.
STEP2: You want to bypass the phaser. You have two options to bypass: Recall a different scene from the Hub that has no phaser, or simply press the footswitch on the SB2 pedal to bypass it directly (no Hub scene change necessary).
STEP3: You want the phaser back on. Your specific option is to recall your Hub scene again by sending MIDI PC to the Hub. You cannot do this specific action with the footswitches on the SB2 pedal. This is where it gets a little confusing. But to make it clear and simple, this step is absolutely no different than the STEP1 where you turned the phaser on to begin with.

If I start from a preset in a pedal, tweak a bunch of settings for a new sound, save to a scene in the Hub and then stomp the pedal off and on again, do I end up with the settings from the Hub or from the previous preset in the pedal?

If you use the footswitch on the SB2 pedal to bypass, that works as you want. But if you press the footswitch on the SB2 pedal again, it brings up one of the two pedal presets NOT the preset saved to the Hub scene.

What I guess I'm asking, do I need to first save the tweaked settings as a preset in the pedal before saving the scene?

No, the two presets on the pedal are independent from the saved Hub scenes. The individual SB2 pedals continue to work exactly as they always have as stand alone boxes with two saved presets. The Hub simply adds new functionality, but doesn't at all change the functionality regarding the two pedal presets.

Hope that helps clear things up.

You can do that!

Just call up one of your 2 on-pedal presents by pressing a footswitch, then choose a channel on the HUB (0-127 using a midi controller) and press & hold 'save' on the HUB!
OK, maybe I'm not being precise here ... what I want is that the scenes include the pedal presets and that the presets are updated when the scene is loaded to the pedals.

Something I now understand the hub does not do.

I'm definitely NOT trying to convince you one way or the other. I'm just sharing info so you can make your own decisions. But with the Hub, or any other MIDI controller based solution, you simply have to change your thoughts about workflow. You're going to have to be pressing buttons no matter what you do, Hub or no Hub. With the Hub you're simply pressing the buttons on the MIDI controller instead of your various individual pedals. In the end this could theoretically be easier since the buttons are now all on one single pedal.

Lets assume you're using a MIDI Mouse.

* Setup patch # 10 as all bypassed
* Setup patch # 11 as your awesome phaser
* Recall patch # 10
* Simply press the Up button on the MIDI Mouse when you want the phaser on
* Simply press the Down button on the MIDI Mouse when you want the phaser off
* Setup patch #12 for your overdrive on, phaser on with more resonance, and with an echo on the Dimension Reverb, controlling the reverb send with an expression pedal
* You can decide how to navigate through the patches/scenes depending on the functionality provided with your MIDI controller. The MIDI Mouse provides a "search" mode where you can scroll to a patch/scene without actually activating/recalling it, then press the activate button when you want that patch/scene to immediately engage.

A lot of functionality can be had with just the three buttons on the MIDI Mouse. It's a different workflow. But theoretically all on one pedal.

Different MIDI controllers provide different functionality. Some provide banks where you then have instant, direct access to 5-10 patch/scene buttons. No up/down/search necessary. Some provide banks, patches, and ALSO programmable buttons which would allow you to send MIDI CC which could then directly modulate parameters on the SB2 pedals without requiring an entire patch/scene recall. You can go really far down the rabbit hole. :)

Note this general workflow applies to any other MIDI aware gear. You can control rack effects that have presets this same way, other MIDI floorboard pedals, plugins running on your computer, change patches on your keyboard player's synths with your controller (or probably have his change yours), and on and on and on. Damn, I just got lost in the rabbit hole - where am I??? :p

Yes I understand how it works now. I was just incorrectly assuming - based on how I've been thinking about how I want to use the pedals - that the Hub saves more data than it does. If it included the presets you'd not need a bigger controller or do any tap dancing between scenes; just recall a scene and then use the pedals as if you didn't have MIDI. Maybe something to consider for Hub v.2. :)

Yeah, that would be a cool thing to have for sure. You would basically have to send the config of three pedals in each scene change Current setting, Preset A, Preset B. I actually found myself hitting the bypass switch when I first got the hub.

That is sort of the logic I am after in the upcoming SA midi controller.
