Source Audio Sorcerers Society (S.A.S.S) Part 3

I am not a midi expert - but you've just described

Bluetooth -> SA168 -> Pedal
SA168 -> HX one

Try

Bluetooth -> HX one -> SA168 -> pedal
The goal is to avoid two SA168s, if possible: the actual order of the SA pedals doesn't matter, but for the sake of visualization, it goes:
1. MIDI Bluetooth 5 pin receiver into
2. SA168 which has the Ultrawave Bass connected to the pedal port
3. The SA168's through port is connected to the HX One's 5 pin midi in

Now, if I connect the HX One's usb-c port to my Mac, I see all of my expected midi messages being passed through, but if I connect from the USB-C to the Spectrum, the Spectrum doesn't acknowledge that it's receiving any messages (the green led doesn't flicker).
However, this same chain works with no problem if I attach the Spectrum to Chocolate directly via USB.

As I mentioned, this is fine, but less convenient since it requires two more wires: the cable to the Spectrum and the Chocolate needs USB power coming in when it's in USB hub mode.

So my options are:
1. USB-C from HX One to USB mini on the Spectrum (ideal scenario, but doesn't work for unknown reasons)
2. Buy a second SA168 and daisy chain the two (more cabling and things to keep up with underneath my board, not to mention requires an additional purchase)
3. Status quo: usb from Chocolate to Spectrum (the cabling downsides of option 2 and my footswitch has fewer placement options since it can't be used wirelessly)

USB connection needs a host device - in your example the chocolate and laptop act as host.

In your example of Bluetooth dongle, HX one, SA168, SA pedal there is no midi host.

I'm fairly sure the order I've suggested you wire them will work
I feel like you're missing the fact that the MVAVE Chocolate is my host controller! The HX One is just one device in my chain, but it supports 5 pin and USB midi in and through (although with USB it's either/or). I'm not trying to make it do something it's not designed to do. The Bluetooth dongle is connected to the Chocolate.

My point is that the same midi messages sent from the Chocolate, when passed through the HX One, are ignored by the Spectrum.

Admittedly, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to explain what's happening without a diagram

From what you've said is this what you're trying to do? Guessing each on their own channel so you can press a button on the mvave and send 3 PC/CC or whatever

If so the spectrum wouldn't get any MIDI over USB as the HX1 doesn't have the ability to act as a midi host for that USB connection. If it's something else ignore me.

That diagram is correct but I don't understand why the HX One would need to be a host to pass midi messages through.

Again, if I listen to the USB port from my Mac, the HX One is indeed passing them through.

I suppose the next thing I could try is try this but with the HX One attached to my NUX Melvin Lee Davis and see if it responds correctly. That would at least either eliminate or narrow down the HX One as the culprit.

I don't really have any use case for controlling my preamp this way, so I haven't bothered thus far.

But, yes, I have 8 "scenes" set up on the Chocolate, so each footswitch can have short or long press and I can send all of the PC/CC messages necessary. This diagram is spot on with how I'd like it to work. Thanks for drafting that up, it makes this much easier to discuss.

The difference in the way it actually works (currently) is that the USB cable from the Spectrum would go to the Chocolate.

So any USB connection has to have a host (your laptop) and the devices it controls (keyboard, mouse etc) - it's the same with USB over midi.

so your device (HXone) can't communicate to another device (Spectrum) because there's no USB Host involved.

It works with your Chocolate as it has the ability to act as a USB Host. I made a wee midi switcher for my old C4 and had to use a Adafruit trinket M0 which could act as a USB Host, the older boards couldn't do it as they couldn't act as host.

I wonder what the chocolate would do with a usb hub and two devices plugged into it?

Read the HX one manual - it's talking about sending usb midi to a computer (ie a host)

Anyway we are a long way off topic for this thread … @rsmith601 - what's the craic with encounter?
Test all things Neuro. Testing all things Hub. Ensuring new products work within the SA ecosystem is brutal. If we don't find all the bugs, we hear about it.....

Would love to hear how this sounds. Absolutely love this and Source Audio certainly caters for people who really like to go down this route! I was a cable into amp guy for many years but i am into any kind of set up now. Whether it is a cable into pre amp or massive complicated rig... it's all good.
