Granted, some ceramic pickups are lovely, but having replaced the neck pickup in a Harley Benton Enhanced P with an Artec alnico the sound is improved. The bridge MM is fairly meh (I checked the spectrum against a standard MM and a Jazz bridge). I have previously turned a set of mediocre Peavey Strat copy pickups into really nice ones by removing the ceramic bar, poking out the old pole pieces and replacing them with alnico. The only downside was needing to glue a popsicle stick to the underside to stop the poles jumping out as they were a tiny but smaller by a fraction of a mm. I then added some wax potting into the gap. Really nice sounding when done. So I am looking at the option of doing the same with the MM pickup in this bass, but I can't find a source of appropriate slugs. Does anyone know of one that isn't a bulk purchase of 100 of them with a long lead time. I am looking for eight, not to start a pickup-mangling business!
In theory I can just buy a replacement pickup, but the P pickup covers were slightly non-standard so it seems simpler to avoid that issue and replace the slugs, and possibly cheaper too, if not a given it will fix the sound, but that can be true of any pickup.
