Speaking of the moon:
China just landed its Chang'e-5 spacecraft on the moon. The mission could bring moon rocks to Earth for the first time in 40-plus years.

I caught them over Elysian Park, during its Los Angeles flyover.
They must be very confident in the air worthiness of that assemblage to want to maneuver at a few hundred ft like that. Looks like an airshow disaster in waiting.

Yup, I realize this. But it would be cool for humans to fly right to space from a runway.
Flying is easy enough but you can only fly so high on a wing that works at sea level and then it's dead weight for the rockets to drag the rest of the way. Advances in materials might have just about solved it?
Getting a bunch of speed up on land with a rail launch involves too much G for human use. I guess if you scooted up a big mountain you could get pretty fast with a big load of fuel to shift some really big loads into orbit. All the fancy superconductor track / magnets would cost a bomb too.
The Aercibo collapse was caught not only on a camera mounted on one of the buildings, but by an inspection drone that happened to be looking right at the cable that gave way:
