Speaker "grill" question

Well, I don't know how exactly to word this... but I will use an Ampeg 8x10 for an example.

The Ampeg 8x10 has a grille made out of cloth, (if not you know what I am talking about) and that lets the sound waves travel freely through and on to the listener(s). That is what I am referencing to in my question, that portion of any cabinet (not specifically the Ampeg 8x10).

Well, in my case I need something sturdy, see through, and solid so I'm thinking some form of glass or plexi-glass to cover my cabinet's "grill".

The difference here is I am talking about subwoofers, and not a band-pass box. I am building a sealed box, so would it matter if I had plexi-glass over the face of the sub-woofer? Or would this create an unwanted noise, suppression of noise, reduction of bass output, etc..?

Thank you :]
