Speaker out

If I was to use the speaker "out" on the back of my amp, and sent it to a DI box like a Countryman, what type of cable would I use for this? Shielded or Speaker? I have a coffee house gig coming up, and want to just bring my Fender Bassman 25 and my Rolls Red Square DI box and would like the amp's eq sound to go into the house PA. The seperate speaker out on this amp doesn't defeat internal 10" speaker.
 
Is the speaker out your only option? I'm not sure, but it would seem that may cause a problem, (impedance level). Running the bass to the DI, and then to the amp would make more sense, unless you have a preamp out, or other out option on the amp.

Sorry, but the impedance level is not affected by adding a DI in between the head and cab.
 
Sorry but no. When you use a DI between the speaker and head, you need speaker cables. It doesn't work with shielded cables. I've tried.


Jimmy's got it right - speaker out jacks need speaker cables run out of them, as they're still carrying the same amount of current whether they're going to a speaker, or a DI box...

The current draw is based on the load impedance, and with the 10M Ohms of the Countryman it's infinitesimal. You should be able to run either speaker or instrument cable. If there's a problem using an instrument cable the fault lies in the cable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the speaker out jack is in parallel with the amp's internal speaker - wouldn't both circuits see the same amount of current???

Same voltage, but different current based on the impedance of each load.

Does the OP's direct box have a setting for use with a speaker level signal?

Strange, because the instrument cables work fine in the instrument jacks of my stuff. What kind of faults would it be?

Insufficient insulation maybe. The speaker out will send a high voltage signal, 20 to 40 volts on average, while instrument level runs about 1/10 volt. Shielded cables also have much higher capacitance than speaker cables, so that could result in high frequency roll-off with a high voltage signal.

IC. So it's not that there's something inherently wrong with the instrument cable...it just isn't designed heavy duty enough for the speaker DI application? Makes sense.
