Speaker Question

I have an SWR Goliath II (8 ohm) and two of my speakers are going out/buzz after playing for 10 minutes. Also, my horn is blown, I got this cab cheap and was looking at replacing the two speakers with other units, does anyone have any ideas as to if I can mix brands of speakers, or if I have to use ones meant for the SWR itself. Thank you

If you change the speakers, you must change all four. Different speakers have a host of parameters that may work against each other, even resulting in physical damage to the speaker in certain circumstances.

The best speaker for the cab is always the one the port tuning and dimensions were designed around. Since this is a well-designed cabinet, I personally would contact SWR for direct replacements.

Getting these symptoms from 2 speakers makes me think you might just have a loose wire connector causing this problem. I'd pull that L-pad out and take a good look at its wiring connectors, then you should be able to reach inside and feel for any loose plug-in connectors at the speakers. I think you might find a loose/corroded connector at 1 of those speakers that are buzzing.

Then while you have the L-pad out, check to see if the filament in that light bulb is blown, that'll keep your horn from working...

Your cabs original 10" speakers were manufactured by P.A.S. I dont think Fender is using these same model speakers in their SWR cabs nowadays, but you could have yours re-coned to work as good as new.

If you are using a tube amp be very careful how long you play on that cab before putting in replacements. A coil burn-out can cause a tube amp to blow up along with the failed speaker.

I'm using a Eden WT800, so its a hybrid, but still, the unwanted load that the bad speaker would cause, don't want it on my tubes, even if its just 12AX7s lol

I have an SWR Super Redhead. I took the specs of the cab and played around with a host of speakers' specifications looking for ones that modeled well with those dimensions. I tried multiple models from Eminence, B&C, Beyma, RCF, JBL, Ciare, Faital, Peavy, and Pyle. Eminence seem to work the best, and that is what Fender is using in the new SWR cabs. The three that I thought would work the best were the Eminence Delta Lite II 2510, Basslite CH2010, and Basslite CA2010. The 2510 and CH2010 model very similar, but the hemp cone of the CH2010 will have a different harmonic content in the midrange. The CA2010 is an aluminum cone and will have a lot more upper mids, but with the notorious aluminum cone breakup modes in the higher register, may clash with the Foster horn. Parts Express also has a PA255-8 10" that is their own Dayton brand and it would work well, too. They are also about half the price of the Eminence, but would be heavier. Also, you can get a replacement diaphram for your Foster horn for around $15-20 online. They are super easy to replace.
