Speaker sim DI

The Torpedo C.A.B would work with the Countryman or the Avalon. The only problem is that those units only have XLR outs so you would need to use an adapter to interface with the Torpedo. Suhr also makes a line out box that works in the same manner (I have one) and use it with IR's in my DAW.

These boxes are not loads they just work off the speaker output with a voltage divider to give you a padded down line level output of the power section of an amp. The amp must be connected to an actual speaker or load otherwise you will damage your amp. There is also little point with these boxes unless you are using a tube amp.

Exactly. Solid state "clean" bass (power) amps which derive tube distortion from the preamp stage (or distortion from front end stomp pedals) don't need to worry about speaker out DI, thus a unit like the C.A.B is perfect for this type of cabinet emulation, and seems to be one of the few pro-level devices for IR-based sims in its price range. No XLR direct out, though, which is a bummer.

Would be nice to see something like the C.A.B that is perhaps not so deep, fewer presets, solid variety of cabinet/mic/placement choices, but has the other features that would help make it work better for bassists (speaker level or line level input selectable, pass-thru 1/4" output with/without cab emulation selectable, ability to drive a power amp input, and the ability to load/use custom IR .wav files). For $350 or less, this would be a winner IMO.

Would connecting the Torpedo into the DI be advantageous? For example, have a pedal board and the Torpedo at the end of the chain, then connect that into the input of a DI to send FOH?

I may be in the market for something like that in the near future using my REDDI.

I think it is a TRS balanced output however.

The "headphone" output is mono. Alas it is hardwired to the post-effect output. This means no software upgrade can implement a pre-/post- switching capability for that output for those that would want to use it to run a dry signal direct to a stage amp. That would have to be done with an external splitter before the device.

Correct. So here's hoping that either 2 Notes addresses this with new hardware, or a competitor comes along and takes care of us bassists! :hyper:

If it can't mimic bass 10's and guitar 12's getting pushed past xmax it's not going to sell half as well.

Curious...do you really think that bassists drive their speakers that hard out of choice, or out of necessity? I'm a fan of "dirty" sounding bass rigs, but between stomps, preamps and poweramps distorting, I'm pretty well covered. Speaker break up is probably the last place I'd personally intentionally want to overdrive, though I do acknowledge it can be a significant source of the flavor of tone...just generally not something I've ever focused on as a "need". But that's just me...

FWIW, that's one reason the axeFx is so desirable...it fully emulates all of the interactivities of a real tube rig/speaker, right down to the amount of output tube drive and speaker motor drive is present in a tone. It's valid...just not sure how many bassists seek the speaker break up.

I've been playing around with this stuff for awhile. Recently I just threw an sm57 infront of my cab and it just blew away everything else. At least for rock bass, it just has the grit, growl, midrange definition. I still run a crossover in my boards insert to roll off some low end, just like I do when running the bass vt as a di.

mic/DI combo is still the simplest way do get it done. This was already discussed extensively on a couple closed threads a few weeks ago. There are some if us who may not bea able to use a mic in some live situations for whatever reason, or play on low/zero volume stages (or using IEM), that make cabinet emulated DI something of a necessity, or at least worth pursuing.

Mics are great. We're trying to come up with the ultimate DI cab emulator that doesn't break the bank, with slightly different features than currently available in the under-$300 price point.

At least you get it Jim. I think zero volume stages are already catered to.

Keeping it bare bones but good, what's the part list? Box, input jack (speakon / 1/4"), big transparent resistor, clever circuit, USB jack, small transformer DI out. I'm thinking BDDI pricing.

Still need smarter simulation to do it properly.

That is the key right there. Everything else about this idea is pretty well-known technology. It would be nice to see a manufacturer zero in on the power amp + speaker distortion aspects of the cab emulation in addition to providing a number of good cabinet choices...perhaps a dozen or less.

The torpedo does exactly that.

I just bought a used one, should be here in a couple days.

It just lacks (for me) an xlr in/out and an adjustable hp filter.

Isn't the output balanced TRS 1/4? So could use a TRS 1/4 to XLR cable to connect to snake (or mixer, or whatever needs XLR)? I already have an fdeck HPF III so I'm covered there.

I do think it should really have two outputs. One for FOH, one for stage rig. (With bypassable sim for traditional rigs, or active for FRFR type monitor/rig.)

Thinking I'd like to run it kinda (logically) backwards in the chain. Bass --> pedals --> CAB --> preaamp --> power amp --> speakers. Since the preamp has two outputs, one for me and one for FOH. Will try after the pre too of course, but if the former sounds good who cares about the order. :D
