Started this a couple years ago, life got in the way. Parts: Billy Bo body (guitar sized) Chambered Mahogany / Alder Cap Paddlehead 32" scale maple no fret marker neck. DeArmond Vintage Gold and Chrome Humbuckers Kahler 2440-W4 4 String Bass Fixed Bridge (enroute) Gold Schaller 3/8 Tuners Gretsch G knobs Super Tangerine Glass Glitter Drum Wrap finish on top and headstock. Headstock shape Gretsch White Falcon _____________________________________________________________________
Bo Diddley would be proud to own that bass. I think orange sparkle binding is mandatory in this situation. That thing looks like it wants to get up and drive to Town.
I'm going to build a Moderne: Guitar size body, but Dano style (alder frame, tempered hardboard top and back) in Purple flake Drum Wrap 32" scale 5 string Engineered wood (Blank ebony) fretboard . MAYBE banjo tuners. Deepen the neck pocket, slightly to put the strings almost on the body. No visible controls or pickups. Some sort of minimalist bridge rear of body loaded strings (angled ferrules that are just under the top) so no tailpiece. Controls will be on the top edge of the body thumbwheel, and these pickups under the skin: Wishbringer Music - FlatCat Surface Mounted Guitar Pickups OR some other pickup that will still be under the skin. controls: POT THUMBWHEEL 500K maybe.
Alright. This one is stalled the wrap is backordered Will cut the headstock and route for the pups, stain and seal it. It may get finished, and dis assembled to get the wrap we'll see.
Stalled or not , still got stuff done. In the last month, I bought the basics for power tools. Unboxing as needed. Today I needed to do the belly cut on the BillyBo. Penciled guidelines and setup the belt sander and went to town. Happy, nice and smooth. Got the Tune o Matic today. Also fitted the neck to the pocket. Will route for the pickups tomorrow.
decisions decisions: headstock shaping tomorrow. cant decide originally was going to go with a modified White Falcon BUT: I'm liking the original Explorer headstock shape: what say ye?
Combine the two! I think the explorer shape would look great but it needs to be a little more "melty" to fit with the curves of the body.
The "v" will be shallower. The points more blunt. My allergies kicked in with a vengeance today . AND I have no "shop" so I kind of work outside on the patio. The winds are clocking at about 40 mph. Not conducive to detailed carving. So I may not get much done. Drawing, I can do.
YAY the drum wrap will be here Tuesday!!!! Jammin Sam Tangerine Glass Glitter on Drums - Jammin Sam Cool guys 2 sheets for 100.00 shipped (14x24) HMMM what to do with the extra? I have another all maple L2500 Tribute neck with a broken nut bed. 5 string ASAT?
Well SOB (@#$_&$&--_ Was prepping to cut the headstock. The neck twisted since I got it ! Craaaaaaaaaaap. Sitting in my air conditioned music room. Got it from Eden Guitars. Will see about replacement tomorrow.
I got an Eden neck with some major twist as well I didn't realize until it was too late for a return. I'll have to see if I can fix it
I'm not sure if it arrived twisted or not, I only gave mine a cursory inspection upon arrival. I received the RMA today, but no indication of a replacement I do have a Chinese electromatic neck, 30.5" scale, that could work. I'd have to fill and re route the pocket as this neck is narrower than the fender size it now has. Fingers crossed.
Wow, that's a pretty wonky neck. Hard to imagine a piece of stable lumber curling up like that. What's the grain orientation like, any knots or twists?
Nope. Back it goes. I've had pretty good luck with Mighty Mite necks, though they all (except Warmoth) seems to need a little fret work right off the shelf. That neck might have gotten hot or cold in transit, either way, not your problem.
Replacenent on the way. Giving Eden a second chance. Other than the twist the neck looks nice, and well made. The grain is straight, looks to be flat sawn. There is a knot but only on the fretboard. As to the temp being a factor, Eden is in SoCal, I'm in NorCal @ 350 miles north . Weather has been warm, but similar.
